Im looking to buy a new weedeater. I have an old Stihl that still runs good, but the head wont hold onto string, so it has been retired to heavy brush using the blade. I am looking for something a little smaller anyway, just to use to trim around the house, etc.
Any suggestions? I am leaning toward another Stihl, but am interested in hearing of any experiences you guys might have good or bad.
Thanks.

My Brother just bought a new Stihl weed trimmer and likes it. Not sure what model it is but it is light and user-friendly.

Out of all the ones that I or my dad have ever used, Sthil is the best by far.

Back in about 2002 I bought new Troy Built at Lowes, seemed like a nice little light one. Ran like junk from day 1 and was super loud. After 2 years it pretty much fell apart. I snagged the Sthil that my parents had gotten from my grandfather's estate that was about 15 years old and had sat for 3-4 years without being started. Thing runs like a champ and I couldn't imagine buying any other brand.
You have a Stihl, get parts to fix the head and it'll run forever.

Lowes, among others, including Stihl dealers carry replacement and aftermarket heads. A good Stihl for around the house is the FS55. I own an FS80 pro that will tackle anything, and is over 5 years old to boot.

I have a new lightweight Stihl, and I end up sneaking over to my mom's house and getting her 25 year old FS81(?) and using it. Bigger is better and biggest is best when it comes to weedeaters.
Having one dedicated to brush cutting is a luxury I'd enjoy. Buy a second and keep it for trimming.

Shindowa. We used them on the mowing crew I worked on after high school, by far out perform Stihls. The guy who owned the outfit bought 5 new stihls when he started his buisness and one shindowa. 10 years later the Stihls were long gone and he had 10 shindowa's. The first one he bought was still being used after many many hours. I have a small one for around the house and love it.

I have a FS85(?) that Ive had for about 6 years and has been used by everyone in the county..Fine weedeater..We have a brush blade for it too..I also have a Ryobi that is solely a brushcutter and I swear it runs just as good as the stihl...The small one my wife uses is a double string weedeater brand..Its good for small stuff..You can never have to much power equipment :p

Red max, stihl or echo, you may spend more up front but they will last ten times longer than the big box junk brands.

Buy a new head !!!!!!!!!!! For the weedeater that is
I bought a Stihl FS90 a couple of years ago. While it is not a lightweight trimmer, it will do anything that I want. From trimming the yard to cutting cedars out of fence rows. The model that I have has the 4 mix engine. It has valves much like that of a 4 stroke engine. The rpms will not turn nearly as high as a standard 2 stroke, but the torque is through the roof. I have yet to bog it down.

My Brother got an OLD Stihl Head from the dealer, that is made of metal and made in the U.S.A. He said they don't make them anymore but they can be found. The Dealer also said Stihl is using plastic heads for their weed trimmers because they can make more money on replacements. So there you have another company, that built up a name for quality, while their latest products continue to be cheapen, buy using plastic instead of metal parts. The company makes more money while the customer buys a sub-standard product.

This is the one I decided on. Have been using it today. I like what I see so far.
