View Full Version : Fall Turkey season move

Well, I just read my Ky Afield magazine & see that some of the Commissioners are doing their damndest to ruin it for the bowhunter in KY. The article says that the "proponents" want to have the fall turkey gun season the week before the deer gun season. I don't know how many of you guys bowhunt, but it is what I live for. The commissioners have just about ruined my season already but are still not satisfied. "After all,(Doc Says)how many darn days do you guys need? You get 4 months now!" Well, I'll tell you what, let's just move the deer gun season back to December, move the goose season up to October, & hunt Turkeys the whole month of November. We can bowhunt in September & January. Now doesn't that sound swell? Just who are these "proponents" for an earlier turkey season? It isn't NWTF. They wanted it around Thanksgiving & do not want it in October. Let's see now, does UBK want the turkey season moved? No, I don't think they asked for it. Maybe KBA asked for it --- NAAHHH. Maybe it was the Houndsmen? Don't think so though. So, can ANYONE tell me who these all-powerful "proponents" for an earlier Fall turkey season are? Maybe there is some goose-hunter that wants to turkey hunt but doesn't want to have to give up any of his goose season. Uh-oh, I'll bet it's the same "proponents" that are for putting the crossbow in all the seasons. They are quite invisible, but quite a force in KY. Will all you "proponents" out there please identify yourselves? I just hate be lied to.

Ralph, I can tell you that cyberhunters voted about 2 months ago to oppose the season change . I have probably talked to 500 plus hunters who oppose the season change to late Oct. early nov. ADAMANTLY! Hell, it would be the same as opening a spring deer season in April!...the turkey hunters would go nuts and I don't blame them! Most turkey hunters deer hunt and vis-versa. They think it is ludicrous.

We will have a battle on this with the commision in march. We [Cyberhunters] have already sent one letter regardeing our opinion. The issue was tabled but we will go to battle again in March.

We need to have our ducks in a row come March. I would encourage folks who oppose this to call their commisioners and pester the heck out of them.

My commissioner doesn't want me to call & pester him. He said to just take off work & come to the meeting. It's a public meeting. Anyone can attend. Sure.

Ralph--Just for your information-This is probably Roy and Jon Gassett's idea(at Bennett's call).

The move is a ruse to get the deer gun season split into two seasons so that they have two opening days and so that they can sell more out-of-state licenses. Before they can do that, they have to move this season to create an open date.

Nobody, including the Ky. NWTF wants this change, but I figure it going to happen, it's just a question of when. The only thing that could change it is if about 150,000 does get checked in this year. Nobody seems to want to or be able to do that though.

Boys I was at that meeting and Walt was there also. From what I gathered, this came out of the first and fifth districts, with no agreement coming out of the 6th,7th,8th, and 9th. When the vote was taken the only yes vote was the first, with the 2nd,4th,and 5th abstaining. Their reason for doing so, was to get input from their area, or hunters.

Ralph who is your commissioner?

As for the split season. They decussed putting turkey season the week before Thanksgiving and having the first week of gun season the week before that and the second one the week after turkey season.

Why can't they just leave things the hell alone?!

Great question mossy! I suspect one or two commisioners are surely behind it, along with the pie-in-the-sky idea that they will sell more fall archery tags. Remember that this comes from the same bunch that thought requiring a hunting license prior to buying an elk raffle ticket was hindering the sale of those tickets. So they dropped that requirement and the number of "chances" sold dropped by about half. Obviously a group that is not in touch with the bill-paying masses.

Just be sure you realize, this is PART A of the MASTER PLAN to completely restructure the seasons as we know them. PART B will be Mr. Bennet's double opening day designed to sell mo' out-of-state licenses. That is being sold as a tool to "KILL MORE DOES!!!"

And you fellows who are always clammering about need a tag for this and that tags too cheap. Now you see how the mighty dollar (in the form of a tax levy) is the pusher of problems.

I believe on private land I should be allowed to shoot what ever when ever no tag no season. It's my land if there is a turkey and I want to go shoot it then so be it.

And king richard and his forest I mean the KDFWR can manage their own little socialist world of WMA. Will someone please tell me Why a person pays 1000's dollars per acre to buy land and then must pay KDFWR a tax to hunt (or let their family hunt) their own land. The land owner should charge a tax and set the hunting season period. If KDFWR wants produce opinion and models and managae WMA thats one thing. But they should not be managing private land period.

Shogan, It cost you nothing to hunt on your own private land? Now if can kill it and get it in the freezer without paying someone to do it for you where is the problem? You need to cool out a little! If someone hadn't paid for the stocking programs you wouldn't have much if anything to hunt. If everyone went around with no control what would you have left to hunt? DA?

Highbows right Scott. No license or tags needed o your own land. Do you own land??? Seasons and limits will always be needed in most places.

My argument extends to extended family and for that matter friends the statement you guys are standing on is for residents of land only. And yes I hunt family land, friends land, as well as WMA land.

Which opens a can of ugly worms: If this is all designed to sell more tickets to the dance, then why the heck are we just taking it out of the hunter's hide? Why not make people buy a license to ride their x$#%^& horse on WMA, or run their dogs, or to fish, launch a boat, pester law-abiding people with jet skis. Let's charge folks to camp, to have picnics, to watch birds, to catch butterflys, to count snail darters. The hunters and fishermen of KY bought and paid for every deer and turkey on every WMA in this state. If you, Mr. and Mrs. Don't Hunt-Don't Fish-Don't pay your way City Slicker want to go to our land and watch our wildlife, BUY A DAMN LICENSE!

Birdman, I believe Ralph is in the 5th district and that is Doc Rich. He is the same commisioner that I called and spoke with about the X-bow issue, he wasn't overly receptive. Lets see-commisioner? He says take off work and show up at the meeting, it's open to the public? THATS JUST SWELL! And what do we need commisioners for if we are all going to show up ourselves? Awfull big for our briches or just don't really care what our constituents want? Which is it? What the hell will the extra revenue amount to anyway if the hntrs are not happy with the product?
I wonder if it is this way all over the state or if it's just N.KY. Ralf? I have brought up issues concerning the bowhntrs and recieved the same reply, we don't want to here it, you guys have more time in the woods than anyone. If they motion for this at a meeting someone from the UBK should fall out of their chair onto the floor screaming and kicking, throwing an absolut fit cause we just took another one to the heart! But they won't. And we will just keep getting pounded with more seasons. I'm all for orginizations when they do somethig. untill then I'll make my own phone calls!
Xtreme dont get me wrong, your letter shows our unity but I think you must push each and everyone of those 500 bowhntrs to make a phone call to those commisioners. And that goes for all of our brother hntrs out thier, I'm sure they have thier reasons too.
Please post the commisioners names and ph. numbers.

I've been wondering who these "proponents" are as well. Suppose they'll come out of the woodwork after these things come to pass.

If this is all a grand scheme to get more $$$, that's a dang shame, because (as mossyhorns pointed out), there's still a mess of freeloaders that could be tapped for some cash.
