How effective are they? Im sure great to other hunters. haha Im new to the gobbler calls so. It seemed last year the toms stayed and gobbled together most of the day. Maybe a call will help?

I think they "can" help if used in certain situations, but not that often in my experience. I use a diaphragm call to gobble with, and a couple of weeks ago it helped me to gain an Osceola's attention and caused him to at least come a little closer and check out a full strut decoy before he finally broke and came on in (to other calls). Maybe it helped, maybe it didn't?

They make great locators, particularly on public land in my experiences. But they must be used sparingly and from a constant moving position. I like the Quacker Boy Challenging Jake.

I use a tube call to gobble on. It is VERY loud and is a great locater, but I use it sparringly. I have also used it on birds that were hung up with some success.

Like all turkey calls, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

I can remember having successful hunts on 3 toms while using gobbler calls.

Gobble Calls can draw in Hens which sometimes bring Gobblers:In 2 of the cases, I was on roosted birds and put out decoys. Both toms had hens all around them, and I could hear them clucking/cutting like crazy from the roost. I knew that my chances of calling them in with a hen call were nonexistent once the toms assembled their hens under their roost. Before fly down, I used the gobbler call, and had several hens fly right into my spread. A few minutes later, the gobblers did the same thing, and that was that.

On the last tom, I wasn't using decoys, and had gotten on a gobbling bird at about 9:30 am. I was cutting pretty aggressively from about 10 yards from a field edge, and the tom came running in to about 100 yards and began to strut. I stopped calling, but he wouldn't budge from the strut zone he'd established. 2 or 3 times, he'd start to walk off, but I'd call again and he'd immediately go right back to the same spot and start strutting. After doing this a few times, I knew that he was eventually going to just lose interest, and I'd have to try to circle him. Once I hit the gobble call, that tom must've not liked the sick sounding jake trying to move in on his women and he came running over. :p

I agree with buckfever. I have had a couple hunts where i gobbled at henned up or hung up birds with a mouth call after trying every thing else known to man, just to have them try to run over me after gobbling at them.

Just be careful when you do it, especially if you are on public land. Too many idiots shoot at sound these days. watch your back!

In Ohio, where I primarily turkey hunt, I have used a gobble shaker. I ONLY use it when two things happen. 1) THe woods are completely DEAD 2) I am on the move and on my way out.

Note: This is private ground. I wouldnt even have it in the truck if I hunted public land in Ohio. Scary.

It works good on private land if you have two people hunting and a gobbler on roost that won't come down. Have one person do very soft hen calls and the other one back up at least 100 yards behind the person hen calling and give it a shake and make him think another gobbler is approaching and he will come and meet his doom....sometimes. ;) Nothing, and I mean NOTHING works everytime.

I use a diaphragm call to gobble with, although I will rarely do it on private land and wouldn't even try it on public land...

I will use the gobbling calls mainly in competition.
