Anybody know approximately or even if a turkey has a home range area? I know a deer's is approximately a square mile.I regularly see hens and their broods through the summer and early fall on my place (never a gobbler) but then they diappear before fall gun season, also I never hear gobbling there in the spring and I don't understand why or where they are going?
Thanks for any help,
Glenn P.

I never see birds on my place during the Spring season either, but I have seen as many as 9 different gobblers and 30 hens in the Fall/Winter. Go figure.

according to the studies i have read about a gobblers home range is usually a square mile a hen may be a bit more i saw a documentary which showed hens usually dont nest in same areas they travel to ensure the flock gets established in area...i have seen what i thought was the same hen use the same nesting area but it could be another ..

A deers range is a lot bigger than a sq. mile, that's an old wives tale and has been proven wrong in countless studies. And a turkeys range is a lot bigger than a deers. They will migrate for miles mainly in flocks and because of food sources. Hens do seem to nest in some of the same areas year after year, but you may or may not have gobblers follow them into those areas.

I took a bird back in 99' or 2000 I think it was that was radio collared here in Ky. When I reported the harvest I got to talk with the biologist and found out the specifics of my bird. From where the bird was trapped and where I killed it was nearly 1 3/4 miles.

I've read articles mentioning that some flocks will move 5-6 miles between spring and fall. A couple areas I hunt supports this. On one property I hunt, it is loaded with birds in the fall. I'm talking about seeing 150+ birds a day. Then in the spring, you cannot find any sign and the closest gobble is about 3 miles away.

Good Hunting,
