View Full Version : Sad day yesterday.
Well as you all know, as the weather broke, the hay started to fall on the ground. My step-dad managed to destroy (2) nests and (2) hens. I also managed to get (1) nest myself. We did manage to save another nest that had (11) eggs in it. The hen flew off of it right as we got close. Maybe the rains haven't hurt the population as much as we thought. It is so hard to see nest when the hay is blown down and buched up like it is this year. It saddens me to destroy a nest, but what is a farmer to do? We can't wait until all the eggs have hatched before mowing.

Hey there isnt anything we can do about it i mean it is hard to see the nest when your mowing. But let me give you some advice it aint much but before you mow run are walk through the field real fast an look for the birds an nest. I've saved a couple of nest like that.

How can you do that when you are going into a 40 or 50 acre field? That would take up all your time and chances are wouldn't help find all of the nests. I think I will stay with just trying to pay attention while on the tractor.

Thats too bad Lab,..Like you said, it's impossible to wait, and impossible to walk & "find" every nest. Just part of it I reckon. However I'm glad to hear the weather hasn't taken near the toll we'd all feared.

Unless you get lucky, and the hen flies off the nest, your chances of seeing it, and being able to avoid it are pretty slim. Thats part of it, can't beat yourself up over it.

i agree, i also hit a hen on the tractor while raking hay. I walked the field before raking, but i simply didnt see every nest. However, all the poults dont get killed so there will still be some turkeys left!
Happy Hunting
