Just wondered if there's anybody that digs ramps to eat in Ky? They dig a lot in Va and W.V. I've never dug them. I just recently found out what they were. But I'll be looking for them now. I guess we got them here in E.Ky too.

They taste kinda like an onion and a garlic mixed together. A lot of people cut them up and cook them in eggs or burgers. They use them for seasoning other foods.
They grow in small bunches early in the season.

I've never heard of them either, but my research on "ramps" starts now.

I think Harlan Co. has a Ramp festival in the spring and there may be more. There are several in TN also.

I know there used to be a Poke Salad Festival in Harlan but I didn't know about ramps. Seem like I heard about those before but can't remember...

Here is some research I found: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allium_tricoccum

We've always fixed em with taters and peas or beans. Works great as a natural substitution for onions. I'm sure if you've been in the springtime mountains you've passed many of them turkey hunting.

Are ramps the same as shallots (cross between onion & garlic)? Wouldn't mind trying a few...

You can eat the entire thing. I like the greens best of all. Some folks also call them leaks. I used to pick the heck out of them in Northern Ohio, but have not found any around here.
