What do you guys think about polishing barrels. I shoot a 835 and have heard it helps patterns.....what do you think?

I have read alot about it on various sites. Most that do it or have it done, swear it helps. I can't remember ever seeing someone who said it hurt their patterns. I haven't tried it yet but plan to this year.
There are several detailed write ups on how to polish a shotgun barrel. The one using scotch brite pads is probably the one i'll use. There is one using a barrel hone , the hone is fairly expensive, I would be hesitant to use it because its pretty aggressive.

It helps some more than others, but if done right, it can't hurt. Most 835 bores that I've seen are pretty rough. They are backbored though, and that helps a bit. The forcing cone isn't as abrupt. --Mike Ezell

I do a similar thing. I use FLITZ-- it's a light abrasive metal cleaner. I use a strip of an old hunting sock instead of a scotch-brite pad. It works the same way. I would think it would be a bit less aggressive than the Scotch-brite. The only improvement I've seen is that the barrels seem to be clean after this treatment.

This is a handy thing to try on a rifle chamber as well, if you have a sticky chamber. A litttle FLITZ and a little rotation and VIOLA! (who's she?) . BTW rifle chambers can also be sticky if you've got reloads that are too hot and about ready to blow up the rifle. Be sure you know the difference.

Looks like it's not a good idea for chrome barrels like the SBEII or M2. Thanks for the info though!

There's a complete how to at oldgobbler.com. It helped my 870SM put about 20 extra pellets in a 10' circle @ 40yds. I was not entirely correct the article I mentioned used a hone. I used a bore brush wrapped with a piece of scotch bright pad with some JB bore paste on it. Chuck the cleaning rod in a drill and polish away. You must not hone the chamber area or get any paste in the choke threads. I drilled the spent primer out of a shot shell and use that as a bore guide and chamber protecter. Just keep the brush moving so you get an even polish.

I thought I once read in my 1187 manual that you are NOT supposed to do this as it may damage the gun?
