Got these pix this morning of a Tom breeding a hen. Couldn't believe they were already mating. He was on top of her for about 5 minutes.

They start breeding here in mid-March too, I found a nest once on April 6th that had 9 eggs in it. Most of the early nesters get broken up by predators because of a lack of dense vegetation at that time. ( It's just easier for predators to find the nests)

Looks like he is top dawg around them woods...do you guys think the ice storm will help the hens hide there nests better this year with all of the fallen limbs and debris?

Im sure that with all the downfall in the woods, some hens will use these and it can only help. Im equally sure in those hard hit counties that gobblers will be a hung-up nightmare. Makes it even more exciting...don't you think??

March 21st is the opening day. As for Gobbling.....NOPE. I even stood on my front porch for 5 minutes and watched these guys fly off the roost in the field below my house. Not one gobble. I even try to go out and call just to get a shock gobble out of them, but nothing. Not sure what that's all about. It was about 75 here today, and those 2 toms are really going after these hens. I'm sure they have breed all day. At this rate, they may be gone by the time season starts.

I hunt in the North East Georgia Mountains. I'm actally bordered to North Carolina. If I cross the mountain behind my house, I'm in NC. :) I did get a gobble yesterday evening. Didn't hear a sound this morning before I went to work though. Those hens are busting up a little now. Should be prime hunting opening morning.
