I just made two of these homemade stands (http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/edu24.htm) using pvc pipe. They replaced a couple of big heavy monsters I made using 2x4s and metal brackets. I'm looking forward to using them.
The only modification I made to their design was I changed the width of the stand to hold a 27" B27 silhouette target. If you do that, make the cross piece 24" instead of 16". That will give you about 27" from stick to stick.
That website, Box 'O Truth, has a lot of other interesting stuff if you haven't see it yet.

That's a good idea but I will go you one cheaper than that. Next time an election rolls around, collect yourself a few of the metal U stands that hold those election signs. Real estate signs work equally well.
I can stick those in the ground anywhere and simply tape the target across the open section. I've been using them for years and they work like a charm. ;)
trust me

Call me uncouth, but I use a cardboard box with dirt clods chucked in the bottom.
I've use the yard sign wire frames too, but found a bit of wind makes them wave at me. Honestly, if the wind is blowing enough to bounce them around, then it's too windy to do any serious bench work.
The PVC looks like a good solution.

Yep. I have a Coldwell Banker sign that the realtor never picked up when we bought our place. I also have a couple of Ed Whitfields and another recent presidential candidate whose name I can't say without spitting. They work great unless the ground is really hard.
