yesterday evening i went to visit my mother at the nurseing home.when i got there she was in the dining room eating supper.i went and sat with her and helped her finish eating.i notice 2 tables over from her there was a little ol lady sitting there by herself trying to eat.but she was shakeing so bad that she kept spilling it on herself.after a few mins.this 300 lb swampmoose nurse comes over and tells her to quit spilling her food and walks off.i felt sorry for her so i went over and ask her if she would mind if i helped her.she very kindly said if you dont mind.so i set down beside her and started feeding her.well after a few mins the moose comes back and ask me if i was associated with the lady.i said no im just helping her eat her food.she very rudely told me i needed to go sit with who ever i was visiting and picked the ladies food up and walked off and the little lady started saying my food.my food.thats when i think my blood presure put a hole through the roof.i got up and walked over to the hog and ask her why she took the ladies food from her.she said she had to get the dining room cleaned up and that the lady had had plenty of time to finish eating.i told her she was about a heartless ***** and that from the looks of her she wanted to wolf down the food herself and i went straight to the front desk and had a few choice words for the superviser about the hog and explained to him what happened.he very politely went an got another plate of food and ask me if i would like to have supper with the little lady.i told him that i didnt want anything but i would like for her to sit with me and my mother.he went and got her and pushed her wheelchair over to where my mother was sitting and i sit there and fed her all of her food and talked with her for probably an hour.she was telling me about her family and how she only had one sister left who lived in virginia and she couldnt come to see her very often.i took my mother back to her room and went back to the front desk and ask the guy why he had such a ruthless ***** working there.he just smiled and said she dont work here anymore.and proceeded to tell me that she had only been there about three wks.and that i wasnt the only one who had complained about her.as i was leaveing i went to tell the little lady goodby and she ask me if i could come back and sit with her again sometime. and i told her i would be back to see her tonight.so all in all the ruthless ***** lost her job and i made friends with a sweet little lady who i will continue to visit whenever i go see my mother.i know that a nuresing home staff probably has a very mentally challenging job.but to treat the elderly who reside there like that is totally uncalled for

If you only new how bad it really is........My wife has worked at a few of these homes on her way to a nursing degree as a CNA. Some of the stories she has told me are heartbreaking. Most of these places only pay there CNAs minimum wage and they only have to complete a few weeks of school and BAM there CNAs they work under RNAs. The compassion level is non exsitant or programed out in alot of these folks they are just there for a job. Imagine the attitudes of some of the 18 year olds you know.....now imagine them taking care of your Grandmother..........If you have to keep a loved one in one of these places PLEASE visit and check on them every time you can if not they very well may be getting mistreated.

You did the right thing to complain.
You deserve a pat on the back because they lady needed to be fired ASAP, you probably made the home much safer for everyone else.
It is illegal to mistreat the elderly but it is very common too.
Your post is hilarious though, not the reality of it, but the "swampmoose" and other comments...
I nearly lost it! ha ha

Stories like that really break my heart, thank God there are people like watermelon out there. Sadly, his kindness was probably the highlight of that woman's month...maybe longer. People who mistreat children and the elderly are the lowest of the low. Hopefully that "swampmoose" isn't employed there much longer.

In my Dads last few days before he passed away he asked me to make him a promise in a very low broken voice. He asked that I never put my stepmother in a nursing home because she was able to care for him at home with some help. I dont know exactly how we will do it when the time comes but a promise to your dad is very important. For those that have no other choice there are some homes that really do care. Everyone faces the issues with employees no matter what the job is, and unfortunately the nursing homes are no different.

As someone who is trained as a CNA and working on becoming a RN, your story broke my heart. Many folks are dumped at homes by heartless family or no longer have families to care for you. That being said it falls on the health care worker to become a caring person and to assist the person to maintain as much dignity as possible. The elderly have much love to give and deseve our respect and not be treated in this manner. You did the right thing, and I also, would have reported her in a heartbeat. On behalf of all healthcare givers that care, thank you for getting rid of one that didnt.

God bless you buddy. You will find that you will get as much out of the relationship as she will. I talk from experience.
ALSO....For anybody with a loved one in a nursing home. IF the nursing home is very picky about when you can visit, beware! They may be putting on a good show for the day crowd and neglectful at night. A good nursing home will welcome you at most any time to sit with your loved one and will be helpful and kind. Some do have cut off times really late at night to keep folks from camping out. In the best home, you need to vary your visits and try to not be too predictable. If there is a problem, you will find out soon. Sometimes there is a big difference in the night and weekend staff.
PS.........Too bad you couldn't get a good kick in as that miserable fat cow got booted out the door!

i was leaveing i went to tell the little lady goodby and she ask me if i could come back and sit with her again sometime. and i told her i would be back to see her tonight.
I am sure you made that womans day by being kind and helping her out. The world needs more people like you, people that arent ashamed to be kind to others and put their time aside for others. She could have set in that place for months, maybe even years without any visitors, or friends. We will never know how that woman felt when you helped her out and talked with her, but i can tell you this, im sure she is looking foreward to seeing her new friend again! God bless you! Your story broke my heart as well, and also hit me hard. I dont go see my grandmother much since my grandfather passed, but i can tell you one thing, i will definately go spend some time with her now!

i went back to see my mother last night and after i went to her room and got her and took her over to a table.i went searching for my new friend and found her sitting down the hall by herself.she had her back to me and i kinda walked up and put my hand on her shoulder.when she turned her head around and seen me tears started rolling down her cheeks and she grabbed my hand and said you really did come back to see me.i took her up to where my mother was and we sit there at the table and talked for about 2 hours.i was amazed at some of the stories she told me.to make this a little shorter it was getting late so i told them i had to be going.im usually a pretty hard nosed fella.but when that little lady took my hand and ask me if i would be her friend until she was gone it was all i could do to hold back tears.i gave her a hug and told her that me and my mother would always be her friends.so today im gonna go buy both of them something special and go visit them this evening.when i left they were sitting there talking away to each other.my mother usually sits by herself to. so now neither one of them has to sit alone anymore because they can sit together now.by the way the little ladies name is gladys and she is 87 yrs old.i dont know all the rules but i know my mother is allowed to leave with family members to go places so im gonna do my best to arrange for them to come to the house one afternoon for dinner.they are both bound to wheel chairs so it will be a tough task but you can bet that if at all possable i will arrange it.i guess i never did realize the heartach and the lonelyness these people must feel in these places.but i do now.so please weather you know anyone or not if you ever get the chance.stop in and just say hello to some of the folks in the nurseing homes.the gleam in there eyes is priceless.

Excellent post. My sis in law, love her soul, is 18 and a CNA, dumber than a bag of hammers and works in a nursing home. The requirements to become even a CNA should be more stringent.

You don't have to be smart just caring. Cna's while you might have a bad one here and there are more knowledgeable and caring than the so called LPN which do nothing more than hand out pills and sit on there ***** while the cna's do all the other crap work.
I don't work in a nursing home but I'm in and out of them everyday through my job. I have seen all kinds of abuse neglect and just plan sorry *** lazyness on behalf of the staff.
Nursing homes are all about money they generally outside the nursing staff and even the nursing staff really don't care but there trained actors when family is around, don't really give a crap about there residents all they want is the money from the medicare and there SSI checks and whatever else they can get. It's all about profit not care. And the management runs the show by numbers and qaurterly earnings. They the management pretty much keep the employees from actually caring.
In my opinion a LPN's are useless and should even be in controll of a pt's care they should be what the cna's are used for, while a RN is the one running the show. LPN's are the most dumbest health care so called professionals I have ever ran across. I wouldn't let a LPN take care of my dog. There too stupid to work at a hospital thats why there at nursing homes.
A good example of LPN's stupidity and this happens everyday to me. Maam how long has the pt had chest pains and trouble breathing. Lpn well since yesterday morning. And why are you calling now instead of yesterday morning. LPn well we gave him some o2 and was trying to see if that helped but it didn't so we called. Oh ok so you don't mind while the pt sits in pain and short of breath for a day and a half huhh. well we couldn't get ahold of the doctor. Why would you need to do that for if there having trouble breathing and chest pains. Well because thats our rules. Ok so screw the pt let them die because you don't want to break rules.
Nursing homes are good if people in them care and not worried about profit and the bottom line. But your going to be hard pressed to find one of them in todays world.
I could tell you all kinds of things about nursing homes that would make you cry but I don't have that much time. And I'm sure you don't want to hear it'
I have been so mad before at nursing home staff I wanted to punch the nurse right in the mouth and never gave it a thought that they were a woman. You would have to be in my postion to understand that reasoning I guess.

Kybowhunter2, not sure where you see this at but I can tell you LPN's bust their ***** more then you might think. I'm not saying that the cna's don't get the short end of the stick, but all they have to do, if smart enough is finish school and they could be a LPN or RN.
As for not breaking the rules, they are told to go by the rules or be out of a job. Most people are not going to just give up a nice paying job in these times.
And as far as LPN's not being smart enough to work anywhere but a nursing home is way off base. I can tell you that my wife is a LPN that works in a nursing home and she makes more there then she would at a hospital.
Watermelon great job getting that one bad egg out of there beforwe she did something to hurt someone. I give you a big pat on the back for what you did and a bigger one for what you are doing now for the other lady.

I see it on a daily basis if your wondering. An no I don't work at a nursing home. Good for your wife I'm glad she makes good money. And I know what I know because once again I encounter dumb nursing home employees on a day to day basis the only thing that changes is the name of the home. You obviously are partial to what your wife tells you. I'm partial to what I see. Lpn's are do nothing more than hand out pills if there not told someone is dying then they have no idea. I've seen it countless and countless and countless times.
One good story I didn't witness it first hand it was told to me in the ER. One lady who actually was with it enough to know what to do called 911 from here room so she could get to the hospital because she was having a heart attack the nursing staff told her she was just having some heart burn and gave her some tums. I felt sorry for the poor women. Pretty sad when you know what to do over so called nurses
I should add as well there are some really ignorant Rn's that can't make the grade good enough to work at a hospital. Most of the time from what I seen the Rn's are over the lpns and so not all the stupidity can be blamed on the lpn. As well as some really crappy doctor that takes care of 10 different nursing homes.

Good to hear that. Thats what they need nowadays. People like her who will stand up and say something when something isn't right or someone is being neglected. Not cower down because there afraid of loseing a well paying job. Doing the right thing isn't always easy but come judgement day do you think the excuse well it paid good will fly.

Kybowhunter2 I dont know where Piner Ky is but I hope you keep your nurses away from west Ky. Please if you see anything wrong in your day to day travels report it. Nursing home pts have rights and that includes good care. Not all nurses are friggin idiots, They do however have some of the toughest jobs on earth. Mind you there not coal miners or oilpatch roughnecks but its a tough job. We are overwhelmed by short staffing and a lack qualified caring people in this world. It is not easy just getting through school. My nursing class started Mid jan with 53 and we are down to 48 already. My wife has been a RN for ten years and had been recognized many times by the hospital staff and patients for outstanding care. My mother is a RN also and my sister in law is and LPN. I will tell you that as a CNA and nursing student that CNAs are the lowest on the totem pole and most have very little med training. They take BP, pulse, temps and do grunt work. Like an army they are the grunts, LPN are like NCOs and RNs are like officers. Each level does thier own jobs. I know that each one is supposed to work together to form a team. In a good work place thats how it happens. Please dont lump all medical staff into a group and label us as idiots.
