I got a call from a friend over the weekend. He was trying to clean up his fathers house who had recently passed away. He wanted to give me his dad's hunting stuff. I found these 2 calls in one of the boxes.

Some of the younger folks won't appreciate them...but I know Turk2di will:)

That's cool. I'm probably one of the "younger guys" on here (30) but when I was a kid we absolutely wore out a VHS tape of "Hunting the Rut with Ben Lee." He was kinda like watching ol' Justin Wilson cook. Just a good old country boy doin' his thing.

Awesome find for sure........I think my 1st ever instructional "cassette" was from ol' Ben. If I recall, one of his quotes was "if turkeys could smell like deer, we wouldn't know they were here......"
I think I'll dig thru my old stuff to see if that tape is still around.

Wow thats awesome Mike! Ben Lee is one of my alltime favorites. He flat out knew how to kill some turkeys and when it came to deer he didn't care about antler size. He just loved to deer hunt. I remeber the night that he had his fatal truck crash. I have a friend that lived close to him in Alabama. Billy called me the next mourning with the news. That was a sad day for sure.

I got that tape, "Hunting the rut." I like the way they always played taps before the kill. GREAAT video.

Oh, nice finds to add to the collection Mike.

You betcha!! Sure miss ole Ben Lee since he passed in Oct 91. Wonder what he would think of today's turkey hunting? I bet those boxes are worth a little, perhaps not.

Really cool. I had a homemade cassette with Ben on on side and Ray Eye on the other that a buddy made for me to learn with. Thanks for sharing!

I really don't know. The were wrapped in plastic, and well protected. It doesn't look like the have ever been used.

When I started turkey hunting several years ago, There were no hunting shows or videos available. There was also no one in my area that had ever turkey hunted. My first turkey hunting instruction was a cassette tape made by Ben Lee. He recorded the audio of 2 hunts, and did a little narration through the hunt. Times sure have changed!!

Great find!!! Some of my first calls were Ben Lee calls. Never had one of his boxes, but had the casette, a couple mouth calls(seems like one of them was called Black Widow, Widowmaker, or something like that). I also had one of the little trough style calls with the aluminum strip in it. Lost lt in the woods somewhere the year before his accident. Sure wish i had that stuff back. He is definatly one of the legends of the sport.

I remember seeing him in a seminar once when i was a kid, and he told a story of taking a guy hunting that had never killed a turkey but had won several calling championships. Took the guy in and set him up real close to the roosted gobbler. Once the bird started gobbling, the guy kept asking Ben when he needed to call, which he would reply "not Yet".

The bird ended up flying down and walking right into their lap. After the man shot the bird, ben simply said "now call".

Never will forget him telling that story.:)

Love those calls. When the pics came up....it made me actually say...."Wow" outloud. Those are beautiful calls.....from a legend in the sport. Like some other comment that was made, I'd keep those things at home...on the mantle. Thanks for sharing Ril.

My dad has one of his owl hooting calls thats probably 20 years old, its a cylinder shape about 3" diameter and 3" tall with a little mouthpiece. Its the best sounding hoot call ive ever tried. One thing about it his videos they are unique! I can remember him narrating a segment of a video when this turkey hung up and he went on forever talking about what to do while the turkey was gobbling and strutting back and forth. He proceeded in saying, “ Now, basically this is the time for you to put down the call and shut up.” Couldn't have put it any better myself.

a lot of memories and feeling built into those little boxes. The thinking man says to put them on a shelf and look at em. The heart says, lets take em out and let em do their jobs another time or two
