Just wondering what others have paid. The guys replacing my moms wouldnt even give an estimate. They have been in business a long time but it scarred me the way they were doing. They said they had so many to work on they didnt have time for estimates. They replaced the outside box and weatherhead and a piece of conduit. What kind of price would be inline and what would be getting the shaft?

if they replaced weatherhead , roof flashing, conduit, meterbase, straps, and wire on 100 amp should be 300 to 400 dollars, if 200 amp 400 to 500 dollars, hope this helps.

Was her service new enough to have breakers instead of fuses? I ran into some while doing HUD foreclosures that had to be brought to current electrical standards when making any repairs. Hopefully the company will be honest/fair. I have done alot of tree cleanup here in BG but I gave bids on all my jobs.

If they have been in business a long time and done it before they should be able to give you and ball park figure of what it will cost before they start.

Unless you asked them before they have seen what the damage is.

Yep she had breakers....The only thing they told her was it may be between $500 and a $1000. They are making everyone sign a contract without a printed estimate or they will not do the work. I did tell them I wanted an itemized bill and they acted like that was going to be hard to do because they were so rushed but they said they would try. I think if there is over a 10% mark up in times like this it's price gouging. It just may be hard to prove.

They had a couple guys come out the day before the work and look things over but never nailed down a price. I know they are going to suck every dollar out of them they can....thats why I want to now what the average price is going for.

I wouldn't sign no contract with them. It's pretty simple give me an estimate or your not going to even be considered. Sounds like some real winners to me. For that matter I would do it myself. Call the electric company have them shut off service to the house and change it out.

All prices depend on what it takes for each Electrical contractor to run their comp. by the hour, the larger the contractor usually the more it will cost. I am self employed as an Electrical contractor, and work by myself or with one other person. I have done about 18 services since the storm hit. For a 100 amp service replacing the meter box, conduit, weather head, straps, wire, install ground rod and misc hardware, I charge 700 if it is a standard side of the house 6-8 foot riser not going through the roof.
Material has been like a wild goose chase for all of us this past 10 days, we all have had to make trips to multiple supply houses just to get the material for 1 job. And if I have had to go to home depot or Lowe's it cost more than the supply houses. So when a customer ask the price I have to bid for home depot prices because thats where I might have to get the material.
Some company's have been doing contract because we have people tell us to do it and cut a check and have it bounce, when it is the dead of winter and the power is out in the city people will do anything to have their power back on, with out a contract we could lose money.
As far as doing the work your self, you would need a home owners permit and everything must pass inspection our they will turn it back off.

did they change out the panel box?or just the meter socket.uk yagers price is about right if they changed out the panel.if not i wouldnt pay anymore than $500.i have seen big established companies screw people just like a new small company.if it is a redicules price pay them half and wright on the check paid in full.if they want more tell them to take you to court.they surely dont want to tell a judge that they would not give an elderly lady an estimate or an idomized bill:confused:

My friend has a small electrical business and he's charging $500 for most. I'm not sure of exact material prices but I'm guessing $50 for the meter socket and $50 or so for permit/inspection fee. Add a little for straps and conduit. Most cases he has been able to re-use the weather head and wire. Some ground rods have to be replaced- not due to storm damage but the 3/4 heavy wall rods will rust away over time. I think the biggest hassle can be repairing the I-bolt. Should only take a couple of hours to complete.
