Hey guys, I'm new to the site but i must say i am really impressed with what i have seen so far.
I am looking to tap into some on the wisdom from the people using this site. My question is for you bird hunters out there. Is there a way to look for signs in weather patterns to predict when peak migrations of Woodcock come through Kentucky. Seems to me since they are migratory like waterfowl you might be able to use a simmilar technique in picking which times of the season you are most likly to find these birds afield. What kind of insights might you guys have for finding these birds throughout the season.
Thanks

I don't hunt for woodcock. I usually run into them in late Feb while grouse hunting.

from what I can tell they really like mild damp weather. I've had the best luck in these type conditions. current weather conditions are great. but as with any migratory bird it's hit or miss.

Thanks guys, actually as fate would have it, my Fall issue of Kentucky Afield came today and it had an article on woodcock in it, The article states that the migration usually starts in Oct, with the peak usually in November. On a side note there was also a great article about quail hunting in the issue as well.

Hi Gregcincy,

I was going to comment on your post, but noticed that you read the article in KY Afield. I authored that article and mid October is the usual time they start filtering in. The KY opener is timed for the start of the migration under normal weather patterns. However, unusally mild weather or an early frost up north can alter the migration. Staying in tuned with the weather up north is key to timing the migration.

Great article. It's been a couple of years since I went after woodcock. May have to try it again this year. Good looking dogs.
How do those Chessies like the briar patches? One of my labs tries to go around, but the other hits them like a bulldozer.

Thanks! My female has years of experience with bird hunting and has no problem "busting" the cover. My light colored male is young, but has the same "drive" and "determination" as his mother.

Give doodles a shot. Not only does it give you a head start on the upland seasons, but it's great dog work for when the other seasons come in.

Once again, thanks and good luck!

Gentlemen,
For the last week or so, while bowhunting , I've been seeing and hearing several woodcock , at daylight and dark. This was in Breckingridge county and on Ft.Knox. Good luck.
