I was looking froward to chasing those whitetails on the last day of the season when I got the call early Sun morning. Papaw had a heart attack and passed away in his recliner. My parents divorced when I was really young and he raised me like a father. He taught me how to fish and hunt. He also taught me right from wrong and how to be a man. I strayed like a prodigal son and he took me right back and continued to teach me till the day he died. I helped the family make arrangements yesterday and as I was going thru all the photos I was amazed at all the wonderful hunting and fishing trips he enjoyed. He was 86 a member of the Air Corp ( Air Force ) during WW2 also a member of the 3C. After a smaller heart attack he kept himself going until the first of the year so he could celebrate his 67th wedding anniversary and have a photo with my grandmother. I ask that all would pray for my grandmother who blames herself that he had the heart attack because she moved him from the bed to his chair. I am glad he did not suffer long but I will miss my papaw. I feel like my rudder is gone but the boat is still floating.............

My condolences. Grandfathers are truly a special part of our lives. My Grandfather was the one who first introduced me to hunting. When I was only about 6 or seven he handed me 12 gauge model 11(which coincidentally was the weight;) ) Remington and took me rabbit hunting.
Boy I wish I could take him with me today.....

Thanks guys for all the condolences it means alot. I have been overwhelmed by all the food that neighbors and family have brought to my grandmas and the support. He was a special man. My Grandma never had to work a day in her life ( at a job) she never had a drivers license. Papaw worked two jobs as a mechanic most of his life and still found time for my brother and I. He left this world leaving my Grandmother needing nothing financially and that alone says alot about him. After the funeral is over I will post some photos of some of his fishing adventures. The catches are incredible including a 15 pound largemouth! The best part about family and friends coming in has been hearing the stories about him when he was young. We will get thru it and go on it will be hard but he prepared us for it.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss, Deadaim. I grew up about 200 yards from my Mamaw and Papaw, so they raised me and my two brothers just as much as my parents did. They're still both with me and I pray that they will be for a long time to come. I can't even imagine how I'm going to handle it once they're gone. I don't want to imagine it.
You and your Grandma will be in my prayers. Hang in there and try to think of all the great things he'll live on through in you.

Thanks again for the condolences It was a fitting funeral and the stories were amazing of some of the things he did. One that really stands out to me was two guys about my same age came to the funeral. I was talking to them and they were two neighbors kids. My grandfather touched there life in a profound way also. They both said he taught them how to work hard and fish.....they also mentioned how he would correct them when they slacked :) And how he would take them for rides with there dad in his converted Cadillac Hearst that he made into a camper....Ill miss him but there are still some good stories for sure. Ill post up some pics of his fishing adventures and that Cadillac if anyone is interested........

I remember riding and camping in the ghostbuster Cadillac when I was a kid. He made this camper as he was a mechanic by trade but also a great carpenter. When he was building this contraption he hurt his hand bad on the grinder. Being a tough guy he never seeked medical attention. It hurt him till the day he died he wore a glove on it in the last days as it hurt him alot. I thought about how he worked double shifts all those years with a hurt hand and bad foot.

He shared lots of story's with us. When the dymencia set in he would condense them smaller and smaller until he only remembered one story of how he met ma maw in a little church on fall lick rd in Corbin. He wanted to court her but he thought she was to young. He asked her brother how old she and found out there was only 6 months difference in there ages so he went after her....67 years later the last thing he wanted to do was get that anniversary pic took he died a couple of weeks later his last words before he went to bed that night was to tell her he loved her.

Thanks, for sharing your thoughts and pictures of your Grandfather.
It gave me reason to pause and question and wonder what sort of legacy I'm leaving my children and grandchildren with. The reflections of your past caused me to look in the mirror and strive to be a better influence on my loved ones ...
All of the pictures were great!
I especially enjoyed the one where he was holding the large bass behind the camper, that had the red and white bike on it. I remember riding a bike similar to that one, except mine was green and white.
Thanks again for sharing!
