Ive been thinking about building a humidor...any of you guys have any suggestions of what kind of wood and what kind of finish to put on it...also where can i get the parts for it??? the old man down the street who was a carpenter for something like 41 years told me to use red oak and to put an oil finish on the outside...i was also going to cover the inside with felt...any thoughts or even pictures of ones that you guys have built???

For cigars? No finish on the inside. The box needs to be lined with cedar. No felt liner. The box itself can be any wood that strikes your fancy. Any online woodworker's supply catalog will have parts and kits.

The inside needs to be lined with some kind of aromatic cedar, I have 4 at the house and they are all built the same way, plus we have walkin humidors at each of our stores. They were all built using standard wood then plastic wraped and lined with aromatic cedar board from lowes

Not just any cedar - Spanish Cedar. Regular old fence-post cedar will yuck up your stogies. Spanish Cedar can either be ordered or ripped out of some imported cigar boxes.

Hygrometers can be made at home easy - just a piece of wet florist's foam treated with propylene glycol (can be bought from pharmacies) and some good, filtered water in any kind of homemade container will do the trick. There are all kinds of plans on the net.

If you go truly gung-ho on the cigar smoking, you can make a heck of a humidor out of an Igloo chest cooler, or old military ammo boxes, old Tupperware, just about anything. A lot of hard-core cigar guys have chest cooler after chest cooler full of the things. I don't smoke them any more but I really, really miss my La Gloria Cubanas. Have fun!

Check Woodcraft out, they are right there in Lexington. I have bought tools from them several times. I don't know if they have the spanish cedar in Lex., but they can get it for you. They should have the other parts in stock.

I had a couple of Cuban cigars in the Bahamas. I was not impressed. Another guy gave me a few upon returning from a business trip to Canada. The Cubans from Canada reminded me of old, stale, Dutch Masters. I gave the remainder away.

Maybe my simple peasant palate is not refined enough to enjoy Cuban cigars. I think the whole thing is a marketing scam run by the Castro brothers...

I heard most of the cubans available in Canada are counterfeit.
