Hey guys, as fate would have it I had to sell off a few of my high power rifles to come up with the money for a down payment on a house. I have a marlin 30-30 I used to hunt with that will be coming out of retirement. I was wondering what you guys would reccommend as far as ammo and how far to sight the gun in at I usally set all my guns dead on a 100 yards would this work on the 30-30 also. I have put a bushnell 4x12x 40 scope on the gun that came off the .270 that I sold. I would like to go with a hollow point or something in that line of ammo. Thanks for the help.

Your sight-in depends on your hunting. If you are in brush, 50 yards is great. If you can stretch across the field, 100 or 150 might be better.
Any of the 150 grain flatpoints are great in the 30-30. You aren't giving up anything with it unless you routinely are shooting 200+ yards.

Mostly hunt strip jobs and old logging roads most of my shots will be 100 or less only in a few places could I get a shot over 150-200 yards.

Try the new Hornady Ammo...I love it. It shoots 2'' groups out of my Marlin @ 150 yards I havent tried 200 yet but hope to this spring.
30-30 WIN 160 GR FTX LEVERevolution
Trajectory at 200 yards is 0.2 ! You never know if you might need the extra yardage and it packs a wollop on deer...

Do yourself a favor and pick up a box or two of the Leverevolutions. I have used them in both my 45-70 and 450 marlin. Also, the price is reasonable compared to what you would spend on premium ammo. In my 45-70 (my primary deer rifle) and my brother in laws 30-30 we use SJHP's (hollow points) in up close deep woods hunting as trajectory doesn't mean much when your max shot is 50 yards and we use the LE's when we are hunting a spot with extended distances. Also, if you handload Hornady just realeased the FTP bullet (LE bullet) as a seperate component.

If you reloaded you could shoot it as a varmint gun with 100 to 125 grain bullets they shoot good! I like 110 grain roundnoze with 34 to 36 grain of Hodgen blc2. Great performance out to 150 yds and beyond. Being a roundnoze I put one in the chamber and one in the magazine. Little kick too!!
