My wife is wanting to start shoting clays and bird hunting with me some and she has never shot a shotgun before. I've had her out at different place so she can shoulder different guns to see what fits her best. But the question is what gun would you suggest and the mean thing is finding one with not alot of recoil!

Remington 1100 lt-20
Gas operated auto cuts down the recoil. And you can find them in the youth or upland version for a shorter stock. That will allow here to shoulder the gun faster and more comfortably.
A 28 Ga would also be good on quail but if you are going to shoot a lot of clays or on grouse they may be a little lite on lead. I have a Ruger Red Label in 28 that I love for preserve hunting and doves. Even use it on grouse from time to time. During early season or when birds are holding tight. Very light and you can not feel any recoil. This is the gun that my wife carries when she goes out or is busting clays with me.

What would you recommend on a pump shotgun?

As far as a pump goes remington 870 express, or the wingmaster would be a good choice, I used to grouse hunt with a Browning BPS 20 ga it was a great little gun.

My wife has a 870 mag express pump and she does well with it. She went to the traditions semi auto this year and really likes it. Very little recoil and really lite so it's easy to carry for long day in the field.

Thanks for all the info! I'm going to try and look around and find a 870 and a 870 youth to see what one she likes best.

Let her handle a few different 20ga youth shotguns and get the 1 that feels best TO HER. Good starting place would be Browning bps 20 youth, Remington 870 express youth, or mossberg 500 youth-in that order:D.

Id say start her off with a 410 single shot, then go to a 20guage pump ,i have one of both, they are really fun to shot. The 410 does not kick much, but the 20gauge kicks a little harder than it,But after a while she will got used to it.:)
