CVA inline in nickle or ss. If you can't afford one of those, you'll have to get a Traditions.

Low budget .... I would have to go with a Modern Muzzleloading ...Knight Wolverine. Maybe a little more in price than the traditions but worth the money IMO. You might even be able to pick up a used one cheaper. Check the barrel for pitting inside and around the crown. If it shows none or very little it should work fine.
A lot of hunters started out with this gun and moved into a more expensive model in a year or so if they found muzzleloading to thier likeing. Should be several around the gun shops around now before the season starts.

The Knight will be at least a$100 more than the CVA and more than that over the Traditions brands.

This is one sport that the old saying "ya get what ya pay for" holds true, in my opinion.
As far as quality goes on reproduction guns, according to my rating, from lowest to highest:
CVA, Traditions, Lyman, Knight and Thompson Center. Both Remington and Winchester will fit in on the high side on the line. All listed offer an in-line except Lyman I believe.
There are other gun makers out there but these are the ones I am fimialar with.

I'd rate the CVA as a better firearm than the Tradition's. Both are below the others mentioned but that's what the guy asked for--something on a budget.
Depends on the application on if it's going to suit your needs. Some guys may only shoot a few shots a year with a ML. I've got 2 CVA's and like 'em both. I've got a T/C and a Remington and the CVA's are just as good for hunting with. Both are acurate and will handle 150 grains if you want to shoot that much powder.

i looked at some pretty good prices on the CVA. im wanting the camo/SS, but i think CVA only offers camo/nickel. is there a major diff.between the SS and nickel? also hows the accuracy between the .45 and .50 cal. and thanks for all the info

I've got two CVA's, one nickel and one SS. Other than one was a bit higher priced than the other, you can't tell them apart. Both clean up great. No rust!
Don't know about the .45 deal. Both mine are a few years old, and before the trend to go to .45. I shoot Buffalo Bullets in mine and they do awesome on whitetails. I'd want the .45 if I expected to shoot the long ranges ans at the 150 gr. load.

Yep, nickel camo should be about $250. Nickel black $30 cheaper. And you'll get free pack of Powerbelt bullets.

I was just looking on GunBroker.com & there was a brand new Thompson Center ThunderHawk with no bids on it. It started out at $120.00. This is a great little gun & normally sells for close to $300.

If I were buying a muzzle loader I would get the New Englander 50 cal/243 handi rifle (by Harrington & Richardson) it has a break open action (yah thats awesome). Think it's around 200 bucks and comes with a 243 barrell to boot.
