I have decided to buy a "Good" scope before I die. I am looking hard at the Trijicon Accupoint to mount on a T/C 300 WIN.MAG. Have any of you used these scopes? They only make the 3x9 in 40mm or 56mm, which mm would you recommend?

I would by all means go with 40mm over 56mm. Huge objective lens on rifles are somewhat of an gimmick IMO, and they have to be mounted so high you lose all natural stock fit/cheekweld. Also you have to bob and weave your head around like a prize fighter (with extremely high mounts) in order to get perfect view. The ONLY time they have advantage is when scope is turned up all the way in order to mantain exit pupil over 5mm in light usually too low to be legal in the 1st place. It's MUCH better to have scope mounted low where when you throw rifle to shoulder, you're already looking perfectly through scope and aiming.

Exit pupil is the diameter of light or view coming from scope at correct eye relief. It can easily be determined by dividing power or "Xs" into mm of objective lens. The average human's pupils dialate to about 5mm-5.5mm in low light so anything larger, as offered by huge objective lens is wasted in first place.

SB is right for the most part about the big objective lenses. The Trijicon scopes have good glass. The ones I've seen left alot to be desired in terms of how well they track and adjust, though. For the money, I'd go with a Nikon, Leupold...VX III,(I don't care much for the vxII's and down), or Bushnell Elite. They're all excellent for a hunting scope. The lower end Leupolds aren't bad...I just think that there are better scopes in the same price ranges as their respective line offers. If you want some really good glass...look at Kahles scopes. Just MHO.--Mike

a buddy of mine had a trijicon, i don't think it was all that great for what he paid for it.....
as others have said, i'd much rather have a nikon or zeiss perhaps...... i know i've had problems with my zeiss bino's but i can't imagine them having scope issues.

i have several leupold scopes, from vx-1's up to vx iii, the vx iii are really good, but i donno.... everytime i look through a nikon any more it just puts a smile on my face

When you refer to tracking with the scope what exactly does that mean? Will a larger (56mm lens) let more light in during low light conditions?? What did your friend that used the Trijicon think about the illuminated reticle in the Accupoint?
Thanks for taking the time to help me sort this out!

Tracking refers to how well the scope adjustments and the crosshairs work. If you move a 1/4moa, or for this example we'll say 1 click up at 100 yards, does it actually move 1/4 moa or does it move some other amount. Also, how well does it hold zero? The few Trijicons that I have dealt with all had the same problem, Each click would move the reticle about double what it should in one direction and close to right in another. This is a sign of poor quality control at the factory and makes it tough to make scope adjustments with confidence. As to the reticle, The accupoint reticle is nice for fast target aquisition but is not my first choice for precise shot placement. The large objective lenses are a bit of a ripoff. The major concern and the greatest benefit of them is greater exit pupil. The down side is that a 1" tube and it's lenses inside will be the limiting factor as to how much light can make it to your eye and the extra weight and scope height don't help in most cases..Hope this helps--Mike Ezell

when you'd adjust my friend's scope to the left, like mike said, 1 click was more like 1/2" and 1 click to the right was more like 1/8" lol..

I don't think it would pass the square test very easily..

I will admit I don't have any experience with the Accupoint scopes but for quality glass without paying a fortune I would look at the Nikon Buckmasters line. I have a 3x9x40 on a 308 and a 4.5x14x40 on a 223 and I couldn't be happier. Great scopes.

I really like the Trijicon ACOGs on a AR platform, but I do not care much for their line of rifle scopes. They usally have a poor resell value. If you want to invest in a quality scope that will last you a lifetime I'd consider a Nightforce or US Optics. Another choice would be one of the higher end Leupolds. Just remember it's like Stalkingbear said, the larger the objective the more you'll need to 'lift' the scope away from the bore of the rifle.
