Treed many many coon, shot out probably 8 or less. Thats only because the pups treed them. I think my old dog got fur in his mouth maybe 2 times, and both of those times my pups were there. If you kill all your coons you soon enough won't have them to run anymore, and therefore no good tracks for a pup to start on. If you have a dog that won't tree unless you knock out every single coon to him, you need to shoot the dog and not the coon.

And by the way, the point im trying to make is, dogs are bred to tree raccoon, not necssarily chew on them. Once the dog knows what a coon is and knows you want it treed, it has done its job. Natural instict tells that dog to go tree that coon, and after a point shooting out coons won't make your young dog any better. Its natural, and if you're pups got it, you wont have to kill every single coon you tree. They will tree coon b/c its what they are bred to do. After all, Preservation of raccoon is the only thing that will keep the sport of coonhunting alive. I intend to help out as much as I can.

In a way your right, but also a little bit off. It's natural bred instinct for a dog to traila coon to the tree, but not to bark up. They learn that. It's not instinctive for them, they do it because they want to, and they can do it because of their nose. Having one stay treed for 8-10 hours isn't instinct, it's desire and they get that desire by having fur in their mouth.

As for preserving coons, right now, there's more danger of a large die off from distemper of some other disease than from a shortage of coons. They are dying on the roads by the thousands. It's the result of low fur prices overall. Not long ago, the Commission considered an all year taking season on coons. It was opposed by the houndsman association that already have a all year taking season.

Multi, You are probably right about the coon population when speaking about the state as a whole. Unfortunatley, a large portion of my hunting ground gets hunted every single night by guys with old old dogs who will spotlight a coon and hiss that old dog up that tree just so they can knock it out. As a result there aren't many coons left. Thats why you see me from time to time trying to come up with places to coon hunt in other areas...simply because there's a lack of coons due to people shooting them out all year long. By the way, we have a game warden around, but you couldn't tell it if you lived here. Its hard to raise a young hound when you can't strike a hot track.

Get on the lake and you will see them, lol.

Pinwheel, you are right, I get checked alot while fishing, but I've coonhunted alot down around the spillway, devils creek, bark camp, and not once had a warden check me. Thats alot of hunting trips in the 16 years i've coonhunted. I know it sounds odd, but I wish they would from time to time, just to keep people honest. lol

Get up with me soon, I need a good turkey caller. Been in thick birds but apparently I can't work a call. See ya man.

I have hunted the areas you mentioned since 75 with my dad, so almost 30 years and never once get checked.
But, you can't get out of the grove marina cove without getting pulled over. I guess it is easier to catch drunks and short fish than to get in the woods.

I got my 2 birds by the 20th. I have called in around 10 birds for friends but only one got a tag on one. Bad luck and jitters is the thing about turkey hunting.

No, seriously, I was aiming there!

Well, I think it's real smart to get drunk and go shoot and watch pieces of things go everywhere. That way, when you go to jail you can stay there longer because you will be certified the nut that you are. Cheers!

I hunt it in the fall, but I dont in the summer b/c of the snakes, and they den up real bad under those cliffs. You can find me fishin' for the walleyes down there through the summer. They are good eatin'.
