I was wonder what type of slug guns you guys use and what slugs shoot the best with them.
I have several diff guns and i have always shot remminton 3" copper-solid sabots but i recenty tried them in my 870 with a fully rifled barrel and couldnt hold a group at all. So anyone who shoots a 870 with a fully rifled barrel please let me know what slugs perform the best for you!
I also shoot a smooth bore winchester with 3" federal rifled slugs and they hold some what of a decent pattern but not real great. so anyone who shoots smooth bore what do you belive is the best slugs

I have a 870 sp with rifled barrel. I shoot 3" Copper Solids and get 1 inch groups at 100 yards off a bench. A friend of mine bought the same gun and fed it every kind of saboted slug made and couldnt get a group under 4 inches. He sent the barrel back to Remington and they replaced it with a thicker walled barrel and it made all the difference. Another friend cannot get a grouping that is reasonablr with 3" Copper Solids, but gets great groups with 2 3/4" Copper Solids.
With a smooth bore I've had real good luck with Brenneke Rotweils.( this may not be spelled correctly).

I have a remington 870 rifled barrell. I used to shoot 3 inch copper solids and had a pretty good group out to a hundred yds. I then started experimenting with every slug imaginable. The best group I have gotten has come from the lightfield hybrid exp. I have the same group at 150 yds with them as I had with the copper solids at a hundred yds. Plus the lightfields are a lot cheaper. Try them before you buy anything else, you will not be dissapointed.

I have used an 870 for 5 years. I only use Lightfield 2 3/4 slugs. So far 5 for 5 on shots taken in the field.

Ditto, nothing better than the above statement if all you can use is a slug..
Brenneke=top notch..

I have tried shooting slugs in a smooth bore (Remington 870)@ 50 yards and NEVER hit the board.
Could have been the shooter, I DON'T THINK SO.:D
It's a whole different ball game.
Good Luck!

I'm shooting the Hornady SSTs in my 870. In my smooth bore, I shoot the tried and true Winchester 2 3/4" rifled slug with a modified choke, good for 80yds unscoped

Lightfields, they are expensive but worth every nickel. When I first got my mossburg I was all over a 4 X 4 target at 50 yds with several different types of ammo. A friend suggested lightfields. At one hundred yds I can touch bullet holes with the 2 3/4 hybrids and shoot a pattern the size of a skoal can with the regular lightfields in 3" at 100 yds.

Today i shot 3 diffrent guns with 8 diff slugs through each at 50 yrds at a 3'x3' board with a paper plate in the middle of it. i was shooting with the gun fully rested and took a break between each round of shooting. i understand shooter error but i refuse to believe i cant keep a 10" group at 50 yards when i can keep a 3 inch group at 100 with open sights on my 25-06. i have also have heard alot of people say that they have had the same prob out of the remington fully rifled barrels. i am really not sure what to do next. if anyone has any ideals please let me know.

I've got an 870 with a 20" smoothbore, no choke, red dot sight, Knoxx SpecOps stock. I tried at least four different 2 3/4" Foster-type slugs: Remington, Winchester, Brenneke KO (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=529539) and Federal Truball (http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0035390215988a.shtml) slugs. My gun likes the Federal Truballs the best. I can easily shoot 6" groups at 50 yards.

Were you cleaning the barrel between each brand/type of ammo? BTW those rifled slugs werent designed for rifled barrels, smothbores only. as well as the sabot slugs werent designed for smoothbores. Also you may have lead/plastic fouling. Get yourself a good solvent for plastic/lead and give that barrel a good cleaning

I have deer hunted Ft Knox for the last 30 years with shotgun slug.
My gun by choice - Remington 870, improved cylinder bore, Remington Sluggers slugs(foster style slug). For improved accuracy and to extend shooting distance, put a good quality scope on it.

For future use, look into a rifled bbl. My Mossbergs in 12 and 20 gauge shooting Lightfield EXP's absolute wear out the center ring at 75 yards. I sight in at 75, cause that is as long of a shot as I ever get hunting in the woods.

I agree. I'm not a real big Mossberg fan, but I do use one as a slug gun (20 gauge). The Lightfields are awesome in the mossbergs. Best shooting slug that I have ever used.

I shoot an 870, hastings, barrel, and Remington 2 3/4" copper solids. Very accurate. Many guns won't group 3" slugs very well. Try the 2 3/4" copper solids. You might be suprised.

I shoot the Mossberg Bolt Action slug gun and Winchester Partition Golds. Tack drivers at 125 yards and only 3" drop at 150. Farthest shot to date 137 yards in NY. Also hit very hard. Never had to track one yet. (KOW)

I'm tellin you, the best slug gun on the market is an H&R 20gauge ultra slug with the 3" "Bull Barrel". The furthest I have ever killed one with mine is 150yds, but I know several people who say that up to 200 yards they are dead on. 200yds seems a little far, but thats what they say. I do know for a fact that at 150 yds they are deadly. Very very common gun on Ft Knox, and inexpensive too. Brand new, they run about $249 in my neck of the woods. I used the trusty ol 12 gauge slug gun for years, but now i will never use anything other than this 20 gauge.

After alot of research, I have decided on the Hastings/H&R 20 gauge 3.5"
Lots of good reviews. Here's a good clip
