I have a question for everyone. Last year my parents got me a gift card for Tractor Supply, to purchase a gun safe. I have picked out a cannon and will get it this weekend. My question is this. Would it be OK to put the gun safe in my garage? My first choice would be to put it in the basement, but i have a 3 story home and although it is a walk out basement, i still would have to haul it up 8 steps to the deck and take it in the french doors of the basement. Not an impossible task, but while installing the exact same safe in my brother's basement last year it was a pretty difficult task. Would being in the garage have harmful effects on whatever i put in it? I plan to bolt it to the floor wherever it ends up, and i have a security system at home which would render it impossible for anyone to steel it. I am just curious as to what the cold temps in winter and warm temps in summer would do if anything.

I only want to move this thing once, so please give me your thoughts.

Thanks
chris

It should be fine in the garage as long as you get one of those humidity regulators that remove the moisture from the air that are made for gun safes.

Famous last words. It can be stolen, no matter where you put it.

Garage should be fine, with the humidity control in place. How much fire protection does your safe offer? The garage is a better place in that regard, as most garages are single story attached and won't have the heavy fire load of the rest of the house. The basement is worst for fire protection because that is where all the water and debris go in a fully involved house fire.

I have a bad mental picture of your garage door being up all day, and everybody driving and walking by and there is your big shiny gun safe in full view.

The garage is excellent place for your safe and BE SURE to get the "goldenrod" dehumidifier(it plugs in any 110 volt outlet and requires a small hole somewhere in back of yopur safe to feed the cord thru). I totally agree with trust me in that it should be concealed from view. When you bolt to floor,I would reccomend drilling the holes in bottom of safe bigger to accomodate 3/4" GRADE 8 all threads and using a steel plate in bottom of safe for stronger, more secure mounting for all thread to go thru. Also anchor your bolts/all thread VERY VERY deep for maximum strength. A few years past-my safe survived where they not only tried to open it,they ALSO tried to steal the whole safe by looping a logging chain around it and trying to yank it out with a pickup!

Thanks for your advice. i guess i shouldnt have used the word impossible, when it relates to the possibility of it being stolen. I do live in an area where i do happen to feel pretty safe about it. My garage doors are not up unless i am home and since it is a 3 car garage, i will install it to the floor behind the bay in which i keep my boat.
my main concern was the climatic changes in temperature and humidity. The garage is insulated, though not heated. i will get a humidity regulator as suggested and make sure i keep them oiled down to prevent rust.
DOnt get me wrong, i would rather put it in the house, and when we built it i had a spot planned. At the time i didnt realize the chore of lugging 500 lbs up 9 deck stairs would be. If i would have planned better, i should have had the safe bought and installed prior to move in.

Thanks for your advice,
chris
