View Full Version : colt ar question...
A friend called me recently offering to sell me his Colt AR-15 (.223) that he bought new in 2006. He said he spent $750 on it then, new. I didn't ask how much he wants for it yet, I just told him I would get back to him on it. I did a bit of research on the internet and have yet to find a used one that will sell for what he payed for this one. I have a pretty good knowledge of guns and don't really know much about these. I am wondering if there is a cheaper model that I overlooked, he didn't give me any info other than what I have put in this post. I am wanting one for coyote hunting so I will buy it if it is a 'steal'...
just needing some input

There are several variation of the Colt AR. None have sold new as cheap as $750 for the past several years.Unless its just plumb worn out and roughed up any Colt AR will fetch far more than $750 in today AR buying frenzy.
Heck in today's market any brand would probably go over $750  and the Colt Pony always brings a premium $

What he said!! I know a guy that could buy a colt match almost new in box condition for $800 from one of his other friends...I told him if he didn't buy it to tell me the guys number and I would....he called me that night saying he bought it:(
As for building your own ar, it could have been done for around $600. Now with the way part supplies are running, and how ALOT of dealers are price gouging there is no telling what it would cost to build one. I am well stocked on parts so I haven't got a clue if I had to buy it all now what it would cost. And, there are hundreds of things you can do to an ar, so it would also depend on what you wanted the finished product to end up lookin like.
As far as his gun goes... I know he got it new from a store on sale and he rarely shoots it, I have no idea any details on it, I will definitely take a look at it.
I would like to have one similar to DPMS Panther Bull 24".....

Colt makes fine AR's and any of them in my opinion would be worth the $750.
BUT the one he has may not be the model you are looking for. If it is it would be a "H-Bar" and not a sporter, shorty M-4.
From what I have seen a full size A-3 flat top heavy barrel AR start around $1000.00 if you can find one. A month ago you buy a new Double Star for $699 but I think those days are gone.

Well, not really, but yes. DS is SOOOO far behind its not even funny, I talked to a guy that works for them...its unreal. They are way behind because they haven't raised prices..as of yet. I'm waiting on my election night order from them right now....its only an upper but its taking a couple months probably

Ive got a Colt HBar 6700 post ban flattopwithout flash supressor. I paid $805 out the door around 96. Ive tried to sell it about a year ago for about the same price plus 200 worth of accessories. Didnt even have a bite in gun digest and locally. Somebody said thats because no flash suppressor. Well Wilson will thread the barrell for 40 but I didnt have it done. The trigger is bad havent invested in anew one for 100. Now it will shoot 7 shots in a dime at 100 with my reloads so Im not going to sell it now. I like the gun but hear Bushmasters shoot as good or better with better trigger pulls and less money.

Colt is generally a love/hate thing. In my opinion they are way overpriced, thanks to being uaw made:rolleyes:, and have had some issues in the past. I'd really like to own a 6920 but since i can build three for the price of one, i don't see it happening.
I don't have any problems with price gouging and hope that the rush to buy up AR's is coming from people who have never owned one, might be a few less of the "I don't see why anybody needs one" crowd.

Etownhunter was that a model 6700? Does it have a flash supressor? I like my gun but hate to invest anything else in it as Ive spent 200 at least in accessories and clips. Wish it had a better trigger pull. Brownells has some drop ins for a little over a hundred. Wonder how soon the parts will dry up in the current Obama rush Im waiting for Osama Obama to do an Aussie trick and collect them all and melt them down. Like old Charlton Heston said " from my cold dead hands" good shootin to yall KC
