Yes, you can do that - wrap it in a towel to keep the feathers neat. You can freeze it for quite some time. Some guys will put em in a panty hose head-first to protect and care for the feathers.

Yep it will work. You can also put him in a cotton pillow case. Just be sure that you do not tie any ropes or ties around the feathers to close off the bag. You don't want to crimple or scrunch up the tail feathers.

..........I hope to have these worries also!

would some type of gutting be necessary first? I've just done tailfeather mounts in the past.

Don't gut it unless you know how. Let the taxidermist do it. Most will save the meat for you, if you want it.

as a taxidermist there is no need to "gut/skin" your bird. we (most) taxidermist skin them a way you never think of.i getting ready to mount one that was cut from tail to just below the beard. it going on the roost .told guy that got it i not sure if it going to show.the biggest thing i see with the birds to mount is that the hunter lets the bird "flop" around, beating the feathers on the wings & shoulders.just handle them with "love" not slidding around in the back of the truck.
and by the way if any of you get birds that you not going to mount but are in god shape i would like the"body skin" to replace some . you cane have the beard , tail & spurs.

Two questions from a novice hunter--can you breast out a gobbler and then have it mounted? Also, can you freeze the whole bird when time is an issue, then thaw it later, breast it out, and then still have it mounted? Never needed to do either of those, but time will be short Thursday and Friday and I'm hopeful. Please advise and keep your snickers to yourself!

we get $400 any position $25 extra for a gobbling bird
as far as breasting one out i would recommend you let the taxidermist do it...we can skin it out and return the meat to you...best thing to do is freeze the bird whole in a garbage bag make sure the entire bird including tail feathers are in the bag...
