View Full Version : Kentucky Sportsman License
I just wanted to make sure--and this sounds like a dumb question--but does the Kentucky Sportsman License include the fall Archery Deer Permit? It does not SPECIFICALLY say in the KY DFW official site. Although I guess you can assume "Deer Permit" includes archery, gun, blackpowder, etc. The reason why I ask is because, if you notice below (which was cut and pasted directly from their own website) it specifically mentions an archery and firearm permit for turkey. But for deer...it doesn't say if it's good for gun, bow or what--too me, knowing how some governments work, if it's not clear, then it's punishable.
Cut and paste from KY official site:
<b>Sportsman License - Includes Combination Hunting and Fishing License, Deer Permit, Spring Turkey Permit, Fall Archery Turkey Permit, Fall Firearm Turkey Permit, State Waterfowl Permit and Trout Permit</b>

Your deer permit covers both gun and archery and muzzeloader.

According to the KDFWR website "bonus" archery permits are still available. They are for antlerless deer only. I guess they are not mentioned in conjunction with the sportsman license because they are bonus permits, but they are still available to bowhunters and are good statewide.

There are no 'archery permits' any longer. They are simply called 'bonus deer permits' now. The hunter haas the responsibility to look at the zones and see if they can be used for what ever weapon. And they are not included in the Sportsman license.
This is the only way to go if you are a hunter who needs all of the these tags. It allows you to have all of your licenses and tags on one piece of paper. It is much easier to keep up with than four or five different ones. If I am correct, I think it even saves you $10-$15 when you buy the sportsman's package rather than buying all your tags individually.

Multi, I think we had this discussion last year and it was concluded that "bonus deer permits" were indeed covered under the Sportsman's License....basically, I believe the Sportsman's License is designed to cover all state deer & turkey permits.
Yep...it's $80 for the Sportsman license.

You do get the intial "two deer" permit, but not the bonus tag. It does cover all the available turkey tags.
The Dept. web site is not up-to-date. It still shows an "archery" bonus tag, but those have been changed to just bonus tags. It's in the guide correctly.

If you're sure, I'll take your word for it. Maybe it was the "Senior" license that got the bonus deer permits with it?

Multi is right. The Sportsman license does not include "bonus" deer permits. You have to shell out another $15 for a bonus deer permit.
I think I save $37.50 by purchasing the Sportsman license. The savings pays for one of my sons to hunt, so I buy it.

I looked into buying the Sportsman license a few years ago but it was not a good buy for me. I don't hunt ducks nor do I fish for trout. The only way you save money is if you need everytag. If they come out with a hunting/fishing/deer tag/ turkey tag combo, I might be interested.

Grouseguy I don't think any license would come with "bonus" deer permits. If they did how many would you get? You can take unlimited does in zone 1 counties as long as you buy a bonus permit for each one after your state wide tags are filled.

DoeMaster,
If you buy a hunting license, fishing license, deer permits, spring turkey, then fall turkey archery permit and a fall turkey shotgun permit, you will save yourself money by purchasing the sportsman license. I don't think enough people realize this.
A combo hunt/fish is $22.50. Deer permit is $25, spring turkey permits are $20, the fall turkey archery is $15 and another $15 for fall shotgun turkey for a grand total of $97.50. You would save yourself $17.50, regardless of needing a trout stamp or state duck stamp, which may be used as your migratory bird stamp if you dove hunt. Even if you don't buy both fall turkey permits, you are still ahead by $2.50.

Thanks for the heads up KyHorse. I haven't looked into purchasing a sportsman license for a couple of years. I don't know if its price changes or if my calculations were off, but it didn't seem like a good deal for me a few years ago.

doemaster, just a heads up, if you, or anyone else, fish the cumberland river from wolfcreek dam to the TN line, you'll need a trout permit regardless.

I have puchased one the last 2 years. I don't duck hunt, but I do dove hunt and it saves me money. I recommend you really look at your math and you will probably be even or better.

Why not come out with a "sportsman" type for junior hunters. Wouldn't need the fishing, maybe archery turkey or some of the others but could sub trapping or whatever. If priced right I'm sure this would go over nicely. I know i would be interested with 1 hunting and 1 on the way to hunting.
