Turkey population has been stated by the Dept at 230,000. Please check the stated population going INTO last fall. The Dept has been stating since the George Wright days that 50% of the birds will not make it thru the winter(one of the reasons to get a fall season). If you have a fall population of over 200,000 birds and 50% of them perish as preached to us for years by the dept, then how in the world does one have 230,000 birds in the spring?

Article in Herald Leader today said we had a population of 215,000 birds and asked experienced hunters to not shoot jakes.

It ain't braggin, if you can back it up.

Its really getting hard to put much confidence in ANYTHING that comes out of Frankfort anymore. Hell, the KDFWR still claims around 800,000 deer in the state compared to roughly 200,000 turkey. Now I have no way of knowing which number is correct...probably neither...but who in the world believes there are 4 times the number of deer in KY as turkey?

From my perspective, I would come closer to believing just the opposite.

There's no way that we lost half the flock with the mild winter we had this year. There's plenty of turkeys. Read the article again, it asks for EXPERIENCED hunters to pass on jakes. Not because turkeys are in distress, but because it will make your hunting better the following year. The article also said that the hatch was done in only 1/3 of Ky. not overall, and that the west had their highest count ever. Should be a great year. Have fun and don't fret about the numbers.
