Opinions?

870 Youth would be my first choice, or Mossberg 500 Bantam would save you a few $$$ and is still a good relyable gun.

I knock on another notch for the 870 Remington youth! Go with the camo stock! I have one I've killed rabbits, squirrels, birds and who knows what else. My cousin even borrows it for turkey season, She can't handel the kick of the 12. One year she got two birds with one shot! I even carry it mkore than my 12 cause its lighter, plus it doesn't tear as much meat up on the rabbits!

870 is a great choice. You may also consider a Remington 1100 or 1187 youth model. A gas operated auto-loader will be softer shooting.

Yea it a little pricy but I know I would have loved to have gotten a Franchi 720 youth. They only weigh about 6 lb.'s so a little guy could pack one all day and not know it. Heck I would still like to have one. If I ever buy an auto that is what it will be!

My 12 year old killed his first deer with the 870 at age 10 and has also taken a turkey with the shot barrel. I think it was perfect for him and he is not a big kid. We also use it for rabbit, dove and skeet.

870 is great if it only going to be used for hunting and infrequent clay shooting. A gas autoloader ( Remington, beretta, etc.) will perform better if the youth is shooting high volume clays. Keep in mind that you can purchase a youth sized shotgun (remington) and later convert to an adult sized stock (or vice versa) The shells used will make a big difference. New shooters should use low velocity loads.

A good point here. The 870 Youth is a GREAT gun. If recoil is an issue the above is sound advice. We use the cheaper Charles Dailey's (semi's) to work with youth on clays and have had good luck with those.

We have had good luck with the Charles Daly 20 gauge auto youth model, they also make a pump too I believe. You can't go wrong with the youth model single barrels either, though I would reccomend getting a modfied choke if it doesn't have tubes.

How old it the youth? The local 4H shooting club has some single shot for the youths to try and I seen them about knock down some of the youth they have a good kick because of how light they are and also the shells.
My son (11 years old)started with my 12ga Mossberg 500 and 1oz shells, you can also get a lower recoil one'.
It you get a 20ga I would get a pump or automatic, the extra weight will help on recoil.

I got my son a Reming 870 youth in 20 ga. a couple of years ago. It was a little pricey but I went ahead and got the combo that comes with a slug barrel and shot barrel. The rifled slug barrel is dead on target at 75 yards. He really likes it and gets a lot of use out of it.

I have to agree, the youth 870 is a good choice. My wife is small framed and needed a shorter (youth style) length of pull so I bought her one about 5 years ago. The only thing she would change on the gun is the barrell,it is really short, something like 20 inches.

I wouldn't trade my H&R single shot 20 for five 870's. It was my first firearm (Topper model... also came with a .22 Hornet barrel) and it's still a lot of fun to take to the woods occaisionally.

I would recommend the 1100 if the budget allows, otherwise the 870. And I would look in to putting one of the new Remington Supercell (http://www.remington.com/superCell/) recoil pads on it. They are much less expensive than the Limbsaver or Kick-eeze pads. Lots of hype, but if any truth to it, it could make the difference between making another hunter or another video game coach potato.

The 870 youth also comes in the 870 youth jr now. It is just a tad shorter length of pull.

I've got one on layaway for my 9 yo who is small for his age.

He's been shooting a Mossberg 505 .410. The recoil doesn't bother him so I'm stepping him up to the 20ga. Winchester makes .410 steel shot, very $$$. The 20ga will be more versitile and cheaper to shoot.

My vote is for the 870. I have the 870 and the 1100 and I can not say a bad thing about either of them.
