View Full Version : Saw something funny this morning.
As I was driving to work this morning I rounded a turn and started through a stretch of road that has a canopy of trees on both sides. As I looked ahead, I saw what I believed to be two turkeys. As I got closer I confirmed my suspicion as I realized one was in half strut. By this time I am driving incredibly slow. As I creep closer the big tom stretches out his next and lets out a tremendous gobble![:D] I drove within 20 feet of him as he walked calmly into the woods. I couldn't believe that he was that comfortable.
Man I can't wait until next week. I heard about 10-12 different birds yesterday worning and 8-9 this morning in the spot that I have targeted for opening morning. Hurry up Thursday!!!
A bad day hunting is better than a good day at work.

Not happened to me this year, but last year before the season I drove that close to a flock of about 9 birds, two were Toms. I stopped and watched them for probably 15 minutes. I decided to get out real slow and see what they done. The door was barely cracked and they were already in the air.

Turkeys may feel unnoticed and safer if they are standing in the woods. Whenever I pass turkeys in a field, they tend to run off. I passed 3 hens and a strutting tom yesterday. The hens ran for the woods. The tom followed but stopped and started strutting as soon as he got inside the trees. He was even closer to me than when he first ran off. He strutted back and forth in the woodline for 20 minutes before going off to roost. I've passed within 5-10 feet of standing turkeys in my truck on logging roads. They never ran and didn't appear to be overly concerned with my presence. Those birds must have believed that they were hidden.

They don't appear to have a real fear of a vehicle as long as you stay inside. Two years ago a drove up on a Tom and two hens in the middle of a blacktop road. He struted and did not pay any attention to my truck. I watch for about ten minutes then a ATV came down the road and they went into the woods. Great show!
