Through the end of the 2000-01 season, the following Kentucky counties had yielded three or more Boone & Crockett all-time whitetail deer:

Lewis (five typical, five nontypical).

Hardin, Butler, Todd and Hart (seven total deer each, typical and non-typical).

Breckinridge, Union, Pulaski, Logan, Muhlenberg, Wayne and Christian (six each, typical and non-typical).

McCreary and Edmonson (five each, typical and non-typical).

Henderson, Grayson, Meade, Ohio, Trigg and Hopkins (four each; all Trigg deer were typical).

Carter, Whitney, Pendleton and Harrison (three each; all from Pendleton and Harrison were typical).
Pendleton County surrendered the state-record whitetail last year.

Wonder how many will go in the book this year?

The following link shows a map of KY B&C bucks in '99.

Does anyone know if KY has a "state" record book or trophy registry? Or does a map or listing exist for P&Y entries for the state?

Seems I remember Ky having a trophy deer program, the scoreing is much different, I think they only use 1 side of the rack or something. I believe all the info is in the hunting guide.

Pope and Young publishes a book of whitetail deer entries only entitled Bowhunting Records of North American Whitetailed Deer. It has state by state listings and a map of each state with the counties shaded according to the number of Pope and Young Deer taken: 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, and 40 and above. It is a great addition to any bowhunters library.

Pulaski County had 7 deer in the all-time Boone and Crockett records at the end of last year with the addition of the deer listed in this year's Fish and Wildlife Deer Hunting Guide. Another deer taken last year with muzzleloader should also make it if the hunter decides to follow up and enter it.

Bullmoose...

Great link showing the B&C bucks per county! I was wondering...what do you think really makes big B&C bucks? Is it all genetics or is it habitat, nutrition, etc? Maybe a combination of all three?

.45--To answer your question it would be age as the number one trait required to make a big 'en.

Even genetically inferior bucks will reach "trophy" status if given enough to eat and TIME to grow. All deer are trophies, but 1.5 year old bucks should NOT be considered for harvest.

Thanks for responding, guys...

The reason why I wonder about what "makes" big bucks is because the county in which I live in (Rowan) has yet to produce a B&C entry, according to the B&C Link website. I know that there's some big deer in this county because I have saw them. However, if you look at the B&C deer showing B&C deer for the state, Lewis county, which is mere miles from here, has produced 10+ B&C bucks. This is a mystery to me. This county is similiar in habitat and terrain but has more national forest.

I saw two more that will probably make the book this weekend. They came from the McCreary and Pulaski county areas. One was a "small" nontypical that had tremendous mass and will score close to 195.

Several big bucks were taken that will be 10-20" short. This is why I am interested in a KY record book. Any news if one exists? Of course, it probably would not be useful if nobody knows about it. There wouldn't be any entries.

The 27 point that Gary Music killed in November at Paintsville Lake WMA is now an official B&C buck. I did the official BTR score today at 179 6/8. This deer will be at the strader show.

I won't let this topic die!

In my travels around SE KY, I have seen several mounts and pictures of bucks that would gross B&C, but not net. A B&C buck is a rarity. If there were a state record book for lets say 145 typical and 175 non-typical, then areas with high end potential would be easy to pinpoint.

I am fairly certain that a huge buck was taken in Knox county last year, but I have yet to see a picture of it. There was also a really nice buck taken in Clay county. I saw a picture of it at a hunting store in Harlan. There are pictures of several nice bucks at a hunting store in Bell county.

The telecheck system allows big bucks to go undiscovered.

Beleve it or not ky produces a large number of 145 class typicals. So you would probably have to start at 160.

Where could one find a listing of Ky's Alltime B & C bucks?
I checked the B&C website and couldn't find anything.

Thanks,

I suppose that you must buy a B&C record book. You would think that the state would have a running list, huh?

Until recently the /dept. used a different formula than the one that B & C uses. They also don't keep records of P & Y deer. The B & C book would be the best bet, but other books have this information.

I would still love to find a list by date, county, and score. It would be ice to see that KY map updated.

Age first (young bucks don't have enough nutrition left over from body growth needs to grow super-sized antlers), followed by nutrition (a buck with B&C potential will never grow those antlers if he doesn't have the nutrition to do so), followed by genetics (individual bucks vary quite dramatically in antler growth potential, and most bucks will not produce B&C racks in the wild, even if the live to full maturity).

I myself remember reading an interesting article stating that studies showed that most bucks with b&C potential were born of older does. Theory or research rather stated that the older does had better nutrition themselves and gave their offspring a bit of a jumpstart in nutrition. There as well i guess an older doe has the savy to get through 4 or 5 seasons for a reason and this may help their young survive a little longer as well.

If Id known you were gonna be here id worn hunter orange!
