According to Mondays' Lexington Herald-Leader a 17 year old hunter from Harrodsburg was shot(and wounded) by falling down while hunting with his 20 gauge shotgun. I thought at age 17 one was too old to legally hunt during youth turkey season as a "youth".

Sorry to hear about the hunter getting hurt, and yes--he was in violation.
From the guide--"Only hunters ages 15 or younger by the hunt dates may hunt turkey on these days"

Maybe he will heal up while he is in jail for hunting illegally.

Least he was hunting instead of doing something else kids do these days. I hope he heals up fine.

Shouldn't have had the gun, hence couldn't have shot himself as the post said.

I hope Next year my son will be old enough to go, but except when we are set to hunt he will not be in control of the gun. While we are moving, crossing fences exc. I will be the one holding the gun. This guy could have been doing the same.
No matter what the circumstances I hope he is O.K.

Hummm....wouldn't be legal.
Here's what it says--"A person may assist or call turkeys for another legal hunter. The assistant / caller does not have to possess a hunting license or turkey permit, BUT shall not carry any type of hunting equipment"

Multi, technically you may be correct, but I really don't think its best for an 8 year old to be in control of a gun at all times in a hunting situation. It may not be correct to the letter of the law, but I'll stick with my original plan.

the smart thing to do would be is on the move adult unloads gun or takes shell out of chamber...when hunters reach next set up adult or mentor re-breeches shell....of course this practice isnt always done ..but a little extra precaution is more valuable then all the turkeys in the woods
and what i read says
"The Adult must remain close enough to take immediate control of the youths shotgun" Adults shall not carry forearm or archery equipment

Hope he is ok also.
Unloading the gun while moving at anytime is the best rule...youth or adult.
I took a couple of youths this weekend. The one Saturday is big enough to carry his own gun. The one Sunday is not. He is 10 and shot two birds last season. I always carry his gun for him. Because he can't on his own very long and I really don't want him to think of hunting as having to carry a heavy gun all day at his age. Guess I would rather get a ticket than have him lose interest in hunting.

i hope the young man is OK
multi and ril7572,
according to the guide you're both right.
<i>"The adult must remain close enough to the hunter to take immediate control of the youth’s shotgun."</i> yet it also says <i> "Adults shall not carry firearm"</i>

If a youth is not old enough to carry his own gun or handle it in a safe manner then how can you say that he is old enough to hunt? Maybe he is technically, by the law, old enough, but how did he pass his hunter safety course test to be able to purchase a hunting liscense?

You don't have to have a HE card in order to purchase a hunting license. Also, no HE is required for children under age 10. Starting kids too early can have draw backs. It's something to consider.
