Had a nice bird at 20 yards this morning, couldn't get him turned right for the shot, ended up spooking the bird. Hopefully this afternoon will be better.

Well I screw my hunter out of a nice tom this afternoon. I had set up in an area I knew birds frequented in the afternoons. I got him settled in and put the decoys out, got back to the tree and started some light calling. Not 3 minutes later I look up and see 3 hens comming right for us. I knew the tom was behind and sure enough he was. Anyway, back to my screw up, when I set up for these birds, I had my hunter face a cleared path through a field expecting the tom to come within 15 yards when he was directly in front of us. Well needless to say he hung up to the my right at about 25 yards, and there was no way that I could get him to swing to his right(he shoots right handed) so I told him to keep perfectly still and we would see what happened. What happened was he saw something he didn't like...don't know if it was one of us or what but after 2 or 3 minuted he turned and went back the way he came. Not how I inteneded it to happen at all, but thats hunting.

Took my 2 boys out this AM and we got in at daybreak (a little later than we should) and the birds were hammering. We had them calling from 3 directions, so we climbed up onto this round knob that sits in he middle of all. I put a deke out and put one boy to the left and one to to right. I did the calling and we had a big boy in front who would not fly down (I guess 'til he saw a girl under him). But we did get a 2 year old trying to sneak in on the right and my oldest saw him strutting and working his way to me. Great shot and we have a beautiful bird with a 6 in beard in the truck. Tried a little longer for the other son, but that will halfta be tomorrow. We are going to hike under the old tom at O' dark thirty and set up and call easy.

Cha-Ching[:p] My boy Joey tagged his first bird this morning at 7:30am. It was a typical 2yr old with 10inch beard and 1/2 inch spurs[;)] Hunting out of a blind with two dekes out, the bird strutted in to within 15yds(too close, but suddenly there he was). Joey missed him, or so we thought. But the bird couldn't make a cordinated escape after the shot, walkin around stooped. We got out of the blind and headed to where i heard his last walkin cadence, which didn't sound right to me and lo and behold, found him hunkered down. Simple shot that time and uphoria reighned[:p][:D]. Pic's to follow soon as i reload the disk[;)]

Well, day 2: we didn't have them gobbling like yesterday, but good enough. We got in earlier today and got up on a ridge I've never been on. Stumbled on a strut zone. Set up the two boys and bumped 2 toms as I set out the deke. They must have been facing the opposite direction when gobbling. Thought they were farther away. No problem, we had a hot one coming from about 200 yds out. Got boys turned around, bird came in and hung out about 40 yrds from the oldest boy and 60 yrds from the youngest. He strutted for about 15 great minutes. Must have gotten frusterated/spooked because he began to walk away gobbling. Hiked around a little more with nothing talking so I we all went out for breakfast. Great day huntin with my guys! Next week we try LBL Youth Quota.

Turk2di,
Congrats all around. How did your blind experience go? Would you recommend it again? I got one for X-Mas, plan on using it with my boys, but have not yet. Definately will use it with bow (deer) next year.

Saturday morning the birds were vocal and we set up on two, however it was a little to light once we reached them to get real close. Apparently were hen up as they didn't want to play. Move to another location and worked what sounded like a jake, he would come fairly close (it was a thicket) and then work away and then back. Never saw him however he may have seen something he didn't like are I may have gotten a little aggressive in the calling department. About 9:30am set up a blind on a small food plot and set out two dekes. I could not see the dekes unless I leaned right and my young charge was suppose to be watching that area. About 10:20am I glanced to my left and just coming out behind a 30"(about 15 yards away) tree was a big tom. I got him on the bird just as it walked into the woods but I couldn't see what was happening and the bird walked off and he couldn't get on it. I will give him credit he didn't take a wild shot. The bird must have checked out the dekes but I couldn't see him because of the one big tree. I could see the other 99% of the field. I think he was munching a Pop-Tart and a coke and wasn't paying attention.
Sunday we heard gobbling early but the birds flew down in neighbors field that I don't hunt. Birds seemed less vocal and once the wind got up couldn't here much. We had a good time and he had fun.

We only hunted a couple hours Saturday then headed for the KY Klassic and had a ton of fun while there. Sunday morning, gobbling was scarce. Heard one in the cedars about 40-50 yards away. Got ready and a hen does a beeline for the decoys. Never seen this before but the hen fanned out and strutted around the decoys several times in a 40 minute period making all kinds of racket. She came within 10 feet of the blind and stood trying to see in I guess and there was not a whisker to be seen. The gobbler and other hens fed off through the cedars and wouldn't come out. Got some pics of the hen fanned out if they come out OK. It was an interesting and exciting morning.

Well we had a connect on Saturday morning. My son (8 years old, first time turkey hunting)had won a 1/2 day hunt at DeerCreek outfitters at a turkey banquet in January. The morning had started out like many mornings before for me. It was rather chilly morning. We had heard this beard on the roost while we was setup on a cutt cornfield in a DoubleBull. At 5:15am we noticed a lone gobbler out in the field in front of us about 300 yards. This bird wouldnt give us the time of day. But we still had a bird behind us up a hardwoods ridge hammering at my Triple Glass World Class. As fate would have it this is the same call I had called in my first turkey more than 11 years ago for me. This bird was about 300 yards down the field edge from us just gobblin his head off. Thank god for 2 year olds. lol. This bird finally had gobbled at 5:25am and he was coming to give us a show. We had the blind on the corner of the field so, I checked him again to see if he was coming. No gobble, but right about that time I heard that famous spitt ummm, spitt ummm. I told my boy to get the barrel out the window and then this joker come out into view. My son's eyes were in a shock of ahh. I know what was going through in his eyes, this is just like all the turkey hunting videos that I have watched, "and this turkey hunting is really so easy" laugh laugh. Now the bird was stand and strutting not more than 25 yards from us. I told my son to go ahead and take the safety off and get ready for the shot. I then proceeded to tell him to put the green dot right on his head and squeeze the trigger slowly until it goes. "He replys, I cant get the safety off" Turkey fever has really set in at this time. I then proceed to flip the safety off for him. I then said take your time and put the gree Boom, I took a look out the other window of the blind and his first turkey is taking a dirt nap. Man you talk about the proudest most happiest dad in Mclean County,KY at that moment. This 3am wake up, $200.00 shotgun, $30.00 turkey choke, $50.00 dollars worth of ammo for teaching him how to shoot his gun for turkeys, $350.00 Double Bull Blind, $50.00 turkey vest. PRICELESS AND A I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS TILL THE DAY I DIE. Just a story from the books of one proud father.

It didn't take long Saturday. The birds were gobbling in the dark when we got out of the truck. I aksed where we should go, which bird, etc., and I was pretty good with what he wanted to do. Hustled in, set up (no dekes, no blinds). We probably had eight different gobblers in earshot, with one bird off from the others and further away. I told my hunter to pay attention to that bird, because he could well be the one who comes in hard and fast to beat the other toms. I used my old ploy of answering him and ignoring the close birds, which got everything good and fired up. A hen started challenging me, I challenged back, and she starts coming in looking to whup me. Meanwhile, my hunter's got his gun on his knee, and the barrel's waving pretty good, so I told him to put it down and relax.
About this time a wad of toms--about six as I could count, come in silently in strut. That lonesome gobbler? He's coming as hard as he can across that field. Hunter got the gun up, patiently waited til one bird got apart from the others and muled him. Nice two year old at 7:35.
Birds were extremely vocal, hens, toms and jakes. We saw numerous jakes--I'd say close to ten, which was heartening after the reports.
