My cousin is a gunsmith and he tells me that a 20 ga. 3inch Shell is nearly the same if not equal to a 2 3/4 12 ga shell. pattern the gun it see what type pattern you have......I think it would be adequete for the job as long as the range is reasonable. It it will work well for an 11 yr old also......just my opinion

My boys (16 & 12) have both a Remington 20 guage pump & New England 20 gauge single shot respectively. I have patterned both and I get good results with the Winchester Supreme (black box) shells in both. The Rem 20 is solid to 40 yds and the NE single shot until 30 yds. Another thing to consider is that youngest son doesn't complain about the weight of that single shot and can hunt longer.

my first few turkeys killed were with a ruger red lable 20 ga with a modified choke i used 3 in #4 nitro steel loads they patterned well and i shot 2 turkeys at 30 yards they dropped stone dead u can try the steel and if it fails fall back on the expensive turkey loads

Great pic GSP! Beautiful smile & bird. Can you tell us a little about the hunt? Did you do the calling? About how far was the shot?

If I were you I would try some of the new Rem. Hevi-Shot 20 gauge loads in the gun. Since it has a modified restriction you might get tighter patterns out of the hevi-shot load than you would lead.

I was thinking about the Hevishot idea just last month when we patterned, but didn't know if there were any concerns with this weapon.

I have a mossberg 500 20 ga. that with a full choke will put 18 pellets in a 3" circle at a measured 40 yards using hevi-shot #6.

Thanks Rem12,
The picture is not showing up today. Anyway that was her 1st bird, 2 years ago. Youth season, cold rain 1st 2 hours of the morning. There had been over an hour of whinning and complaining "I'm cold and wet", when are we going to see some birds, I want to go home, so she said, "OK DAD we we'll go get you some coffee" if you'll stop the whinning and complaining![:D] (This ain't far from the truth it)
We drove to the local store, got some breakfast. We were driving back and I stopped and pointed to a hill top where I killed my 1st bird. We both saw this bird strutting where I killed my 1st bird. She crawled out the window before I got the truck parked. We had to work up a hollow about 400 yds and climb through a bunch of bull dozed tree piles to get set-up. I worked the bird for over an hour, he would not budge. We were able to move and reposition, but the bird moved while we did. I made one call and the bird walked out behind where I thought he would be. In a mind flash I thought everything was lost. Jamie raised her gun, cocked it, aimed and dropped him in one fluid motion, 9 yards.[^] 11 1/2" beard, 1 3/8" spurs.
I know this is off the topic for at 9 yards a sling-shot will drop one. Sorry, still one of the highlights of my life.

Great read GSP, Thanks!

Thanks for the recap GSP!

Last year my oldest (then 14) went on youth weekend. We hunted White City WMA and there was only 2 - 3 other dads with sons out there. It was great. We had birds all around us. Our initial setup was too far down from the ridgeline so the birds walked away after fly down. I had my son help gather up the decoys and we ran up to the top of the ridge. I called once and we had a bird from both directions calling & coming back. I set him up and told him to shoot the first bird to show. He rolled a beautilful bird. I only hope I can line up another opportunity for both my boys this weekend.
