You have "treed" a bird the evening before. He is still roosted, but light is creeping in, and he is gobbling at everything, even the cows in the nearby field that are mooing. You have decoys out, and you have hit a tree call one time and shut up. You catch movement out of the corner of your eye and turn slowly to see a 'yote sneaking in about 50 yards away. He has discovered your decoys, and he is now stalking them. Your gun is pointed right in his face. He gets to within 5 yards of your decoys before he starts getting spooky. What do you do?

A: Watch and wish you weren't turkey hunting so you could blast him.

B: Let the 3.5 inch turkey loads eat some 'yote fur and most likely spoil your hot turkey.

I'm asking this because it happened to me twice last year (my first season hunting turkeys) and I didn't shoot and subsequently also didn't kill a turkey that day [:(!] I beleive that if I have this opportunity this year, that yote is going down, kind of that bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

So, for me, it is B and I take home a dead yote.

I have had that happen 3 of 4 times(comming to the decoys). I have also had them come through the woods while I was set up with no decoys, never even thought about pulling the trigger. During turkey season, I'm turkey hunting only. Don't care anything about killing one.

Shoot the 'yote! The turkey, unless he sees you, will think it's thunder. He'll probably shock gobble on the shot.

I'd pop the yote, worst case is come back around 10:30 and set up again.

My buddy had that very thing happen and shot the yote. She was about 40 yards and dropped. He attempted to advance another shell but it jammed as the female yote begin to get up and stagger towards him. He cleared the jam and shot again. He was really shook up on how tough that coyote was to kill. I believe I would also use a shell on one.

I NEVER pass up the coyote. Ever.

I had the scenario happen in Colorado except that the coyote was a mountain lion and the distance was about twenty yards. I wouldn't have known the lion was there had 1) the turkey not flown out like he'd been shot at and 2) the wind shifted and I got a noseful of the odor of cat pee. Scared me blankless.

There is not many times, I see a coyote and don't shoot.[^]
But, when a 25 pounder is in a tree, ready to "fly down and get in your face", is no time to shoot a dang coyote.[:)]

If you have a yote in your decoys, I doubt it that turkey will fly down anyway........ I'd bust the coyote......then come back later that AM, like a previous post suggests. I've killed three of them so far while I was turkey hunting, twice on my place and once in GA. Pretty wild concetrating on turkeys and see them coming in to your calls.....

Shoot the coyote and let it lay or stash it until the encounter with the hot tom is over. If you think the tom is closing on you, stay put. Just drop that dog and leave it. If you've got time, slide the 'yote into the brush quickly and get hid.

I've left two lay under similar circumstances. In the first, the tom saw the dead 'yote and left the area. In the second, the tom was unaware and went home with me.

As was said before, the birds will often ignore or shock gobble at the shot. But if you're seen, the gig is up. The same applies in the reverse: if you let it walk or leave it lay and the 'yote is seen, your chances severely diminish.

I am going to go with the majority on this one. I would have to shoot the yote. It is just hard to pass up a chance to shoot a yote even though it is equally as hard to watch that big tom gobbling his head off while he is perched high above the ground. I say that noone should pass up the chance to thin out the coyote population. You can always go back after that tom later in the day.

A bad day hunting is better than a good day at work.

I had 5 different coyotes come in to calling last year. 2 in Tennessee and 3 in KY. Only able to kill one of them.

SHOOT THE COYOTE.

It ain't braggin, if you can back it up.

Here's my answer. Over the past few years I've had two experiences when each time a coyote stalked my decoys and each time the coyote died!![:D][:D]

I went out this morning to listen for gobblers. When just as it was starting to turn daylight. I saw something to my right just 12 yards away. Come to find out it was a big yote. It just stood there for a brief second until i turned my head to look at it. Then it walked off. If i would have had a gun. I would have dusted a little fur off of Mr. Yote.[:D]
