Anyone know how much concrete I will need to pour a footer for a 40x24 garage? I figure it will be 18-24 inches deep.

Also, how many yards will I need for the floor at 6 inches?

My math may be off but a footer 12 inches wide...24 inches deep around the whole 40ft by 24ft would be approximatel 9 yds. The floor would be nearly 18 yds. This should allow a little extra..not much.

I'm sure theres some concrete guys here that can confirm this.

I not sure about your footing but if my math is right then you will need 18 yards for the floor

I came up with 8 yards for the footer. Thats figuring a 24" wide footer, and an average concrete depth of 10".

I came up with 18 yards for the floor @ 6" thick.

Thanks for the tips.

Is a 12 inch wide footer standard?

As far as the floor goes, is 6 inches thick about right?

I want to save as much money as I can on this deal, but at the same time I dont want to half a$$ it either.

A 24" footer is standard with 10" of concrete, and 2 runs of 1/2" rebar. I would also pour the floor 4".:)

Barney is right. The width of the footer is more important than the thickness.

To figure concrete is simple: lenth x width x thickness divided by 27 will give you the cubic yards.

If its dug by a backhoe...most run 24in buckets. So that sort of sets your width. Most dont go 12 wide unless its dug by a trencher with backhoe. The 24in width is better and as barney suggested rebar runs would be good.

Depth wise... 18-24 is a little overkill for a shop. Most are in the 12 inch depth range.. on average.

Floor ...4 inches would be a good option to save a little unless your planning on running some really large heavy equipment. If its cracking / breaking is your concern ... expansion cuts will aleviate most circumstances but I've yet seen anything poured on grade that did'nt have the potential to crack. A lot of it depends on the soil & prep before its ever poured.

Barney is steering you right... I'm not a builder by any means... just been around a lot of it.

the footer and floor thickness is secondary in importance. the critical thing is the contractor that puts it down. most are there for the profit= fast, easy, high slump, get out in least amount of time= not always in the best interest of the home owner. stress a GOOD job when taking bids. money well spent is in a higher strength concrete, 4500 psi. use rebar, the wire will most times get tromped down to the bottom of the concrete and be of no use. if the contractor insist in pouring wet concrete, use a high range water reducer, not excess water. i have talked to alot of well meaning people that had some jackass ruin a concrete job and there is no cheap or easy fix.

I think we used around 13 or 14 yards in my 24X40 shop.

I hate being a spoil sport but did you get a building permit ? the building ins. could tell you what the min. thickless of contrate is called for in the footed and the floor

get no more than a 5 inch slump and make sure to reinforce. and as always VIBRATE till consistancy is assured.
