I am looking into getting another street bike. This time I am leaning to a Harley Davidson Soft Tail,,, but some of the Victory bikes are pretty shape. But I don't know anything about them. But again it is hard to beat a Honda or Yamaha Star. 1. What do you all ride, 2. what do you like about it and 3. what don't you like about it. Thanks, LD

My advice is, first off, it's your money. Do the research & look at whater you are interested in and what best fits you. Harleys are niche bikes and overpriced but if that is the image you are looking for, go for it! The jap cruisers are ok if you don't mind the crap you will get from the other guys, etc. and the victorys are pretty sweet.
The most important thing is to ride safe. Spend money of protective gear and learn to ride well. It is now if, but WHEN you are going to go down. Be prepared & enjoy the ride!

If you want long term dependability go metric, Harleys are nice but way overpriced unless you buy used, already accessorized. Buy new you'll have to shell out another 5K+ for the look and sound you want. I dont know anything about the Victory except supposedly the dependability is not up to par with thier Polaris counterpart, but thats just hear-say

I currently ride a Honda VTX 1300c. I am seriously thinking about trading to a Yamaha V-Star next year though. I took a test ride on a couple about a month ago and they ride GREAT!!! I honestly have not saw very many Harleys that I liked both the looks of and the ride (not to mention the price tag). I do have my eye on a customized 2006 Harley though that I like very much. If the price is right I may be getting it instead of the V-Star. My advice is this: Take a test ride on several and go with the one that best fits you and your wallet, because either way....at least you are out there riding!!!:cool::cool::D

If you think a bike will make you cool and fit in then buy a Harley and hang out with other HD owners. If you just want to enjoy riding, get a Jap bike and save half your money.:D

That pretty much sums it up right there!!! Well said. Harleys, it seems to me, are more about "image" than comfort, and for me, I want a comfortable ride. Now I am sure some of those high priced Harley tourers/cruisers are comfortable to ride but I'm nowhere near rich enough to even test ride one of those....they cost more than my house!!!:D The only way I will ever buy a Harley is to buy a used one, the new ones are just not worth the price tag in my opinion.

I ride a Yamaha Roadstar and I ride with several Harley riders. I catch some grief from them but most is good natured ribbin'. My bike has 27,000 miles on it with no problems. Several dealers have left over models on the floor. Now is a good time to buy.

Tough call, but the Yamaha's get the nod from me out of those 3. I think they are the sharpest non-Harley baggers out there. I'd also check out some other European brands, like BMW.

There are so many great bikes out there these days that it makes for a tough choice. Just buy what you want and not what you think others will think is cool. If you don't, you'll regret it. I bought a Ducati and I take more crap from people than you could imagine, but I love the bike and wouldn't trade it for a million Gixxers or Harley's. I don't want a bike that I will see 25 of every time I go for a ride.My next bike will either be another Ducati or an Aprilia.

Is there any bikes made entirely in the US anymore? Seems like everyone is getting at least some parts from overseas.

You think it's good natured ribbing but those guys really believe their bikes are better and they're "real" bikes.

But really there is only one real choice......What does it say when one manufacturer tries to emmulate what another sounds like......?

About the same thing is says about the person who believes noise equals power and a black T-shirt, leather pants and lots of chrome will turn a lawyer into a Hell's Angel on a saturday afternoon.:D

H-D is just as guilty of taking ideas from other manufacturers.

I like H-D's in their own respect but I do have a hard time understanding why people think they are the best bike? They are the most expensive, technologically prehistoric, slowest, worst performing bikes on the road with a shoddy reliability record. No matter what HD model you own, there's probably gobs of the same bike in your area.

Ahhh but noise does equal power......Do a little research on the V-Rod...
At the US Nationals last month a little American know how flexed its muscle and home went Suzuki, Buell and every other wanna be that crawled up to the line to take the green light...... Just the facts!

As to your assertions that they are prehistoric, slowest worst performing bikes on the road.....All that doesnt seem to hurting sales....Maybe it more of your perception than the truth.....

Muhaaaa! First of all, the V-rod is the bastard child of the HD lineup, most Harley riders don't except that bike as one of their own. It might have something to do with the fact that Porsche developed the engine, because HD couldn't get 100 HP out of a 500 inch big block if they tried.

Second, Buell is an offshoot of HD that is funded BY HD.

Third, who cares about modified bikes at a drag strip? Those bikes have 10's of thousands poured into them and blow engines about every 3 runs. That's like comparing a NASCAR to a Camry.

Get one of your V-Rod buddies to line up their American/ German bike with my Italian bike. I've only got about +40 hp on them (with fewer cc's) and half the weight. ;):D

Great points Art! I'd take the challenge with my slow (for me) 800 Interceptor and clean house. One of my best friends and a co-worker is a hardcore HD rider. He has a highly modded bike that is probably one of the fastest harleys in the area. After prodding, begging, and embarassing him to take a ride on my bike a couple of years ago he finally did. At the time I had a 2005 honda 1000RR. He was gone for a while and just as I was convinced he was dead somewhere, he finally came back in one (somewhat shaken) piece. All he could say was something to the effect "Holy s***, that thing is BAD! They should not sell those things!"
I found out later that he had whacked the throttle on an empty straghtaway and at first thought he was up to around 110-120 when he let off and looked down. The speedo was just coming off 177mph....hehehe. Changed his whole outlook.

Wow, when I hit speeds like that( on a closed course):D I don't think there's ANY way I could confuse that with 110 mph.:D On just about any of the big liter bikes, your just hitting 2nd gear at 110 mph, so that tells you what a turd your buddy was used to if he pegged out a CBR 1000 and thought he was doing 110.

Harley has one of the best, if not the best marketing going today. They essentially sold out their roots to sell to the average rider, yet no one seems to care. Maybe cause their original core market all got killed or went to prison. Boy are they gonna be pissed when they get out and see all the Harleys in the mall parking lot.

Harley Davidson caters to a different lifestyle than what you desire in a motorcycle.....

There isnt a Sturgis for Ninja's or a Daytona Bike Week for Hayabusa.....Sure there are a few of them there but with out the HD crowd those events would be non existant......

You may not like the popularity or the product but the fact is HD owns the market.........

Besides have you ever seen a guy with some chick riding up the express way laid over the tank on some rice burner and wished that was you?

Riding a Harley is like riding a horse....Riding a rice burner is like riding ..well like riding a rice burner....What so cool about that?

Max, your delusional. We know that you've got your facts screwed up because of your hatred for Japanese products. I can assure you that there's plenty of Jap parts on the HD.;) If Harley made a sport bike, you'd love it.

Riding a Harley is like sitting on the couch. Motorcycles are not suppose to have windshields, heaters, and cd players. Why not just buy a Cadillac? Riding a sport bike is actually RIDING. You don't generally see big sport bike gatherings because those people love to ride, not sit around in a parking lot and eat and drink like pigs while looking at the reflection of some nasty old tattooed hag walking around in old ripped blue jean shorts choking on a Marlboro in the chrome of one of the 500 identical Road King's in the parking lot. Not my idea of fun now, but maybe when I'm 60.:D

I used to think the same about HD,,, I always had sport bikes. I sure enjoyed my Ol' GSX-R 750 back in the day. But know I don't need anything like that. I have been looking at some HD softails and a few Honda VTX 1300. I also would like to ask a few victory owners what they think about them.

Uh excuse me but the Road King makes up a very small percentage of the Harley Davidsons that are on the road today......In fact the 2008 CVO Screamin Eagle makes up less than one percent of the total production for HD.....

Besides until Harley sells a cruiser that has reverse gear dont talk to me about sitting on the couch......

Ducati signs Nicky Hayden for 2009

The Associated PressPublished: September 16, 2008

BOLOGNA, Italy: American rider Nicky Hayden will join Casey Stoner at Ducati next season, uniting the last two MotoGP champions on the same team.

Hayden won the title in 2006 with Honda and Stoner won with Ducati last season. Yamaha's Valentino Rossi has a nearly insurmountable lead in this season's standings with four races remaining.

Rossi has 287 points, Stoner 200 and Hayden is eighth with 104 points.

Known as "the Kentucky kid," Hayden spent the past six seasons with Honda.

"We're very happy to have Nicky with us," Ducati chief executive Claudio Domenicali said Monday. "We're sure that his 'never give up' attitude, his driving style and his personality will bring added worth to the 2009 team."

and on another hand i think they all look the same, black chrome, and some leather cowboy bags, just not my taste, but thats just my opinion.

No matter what you ride, the key is, you RIDE!! I do love the un-mistakable sound of a HD V-Twin, but just can't justify spending 20 grand on one.(sporties are outta the question) I'm currently on a V-4 Honda Magna. That's because sport riders are smart enough to care about safety and are less concerned about their image. Besides, a leather suit that would fit most HD riders would be marked up about 20,000% and would require FAR more leather to make the midsection.:D:p

We all no that a Suzuki Hayabusa is a BAD A$$ bike, can any other factory bike really touch it, in speed? I road sport bikes for years and loved them. But with kids and a wife I don't need anything like that anymore. There has been some talk that the HD guy's snub other bikes. seems to me a few sport bike guy's are doing the same thing. can"t we all just get a long:) Anyway I really like the V Rod,,, hope to have one before spring,,, and hope to ride with some of all then.

You bet they can. The Busa is a fast bike, but like all other bikes they are limited to 186 mph. Not many bikes can get to those speeds, but there are several that will. There's plenty of bikes that will run with or outrun the Busa in the quarter.

That's not a Tuono, that's the RSV. Great bike, but dated.

This is the Aprilia I want.

Nah, it's a twin. I doesn't look like it in the picture though. Not a very fast bike, but is well rounded.

You ought to check with some of the tracks in Kentucky for dates & requirements for track days. I suggest taking a beginners course with an instructor. You can learn more in one day at the track than you can in a decate of riding! You will have to do some minor track prep to your bike i.e. safety wiring drain plug & oil filter, disconnect head/tail lights, replace coolant with pure water, etc. Not bad.
Heck, if you are willing to drive as far as Georgia sometime, I could hook you up with an instructor friend of mine named Mike Daniels. He puts on a great riding course!

However, my buddy's new 2008 Yamaha Raider is pretty sharp too:

I really like that Raider, that's a sharp bike. Those wheels set it off. Are those the factory pipes? I'd have to get something a little smaller.

I like your style. I know a mechanic who pieces bikes together to make something original. He doesn't care if it's a Honda engine in a Harley frame. He's comes up with some really cool one off bikes. If I was just a tad more mechanically inclined, I'd love to take on a project.

Awesome bike, man. Easily my favorite of the thread.

I'm late getting here but here's my ride:

'07 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Classic, bought it new 13 months and 9,800 miles ago. Other than the pipes, lightbar and 16" apes it's still stock for now. I haven't regretted buying a Japanese bike for a second. Would I like to have a Harley-Davidson? Sure, why not? As long as someone else is footin' the bill!

No. I bought it new in Hurricane, WV in 02. I sold it in late 04 to a young kid who didn't listen to my warnings about it being much more bike than he had already. He totaled it 2 weeks later.:( Someone around here may have pieced it back together though.

I was on that website for a while. I was under the impression in was a big group of people, but I think it's really only a group of about 7 or 8 people. I saw them all down at the bar on a thursday night on the river. They seemed like they had their own thing going, so I didn't talk to them.

Here's a new video of one of my rides last month. I'm still trying to hone my editing skills, and after a minor conflict with Tom Petty's record label and something called "copyright violation", whatever that means:D, I finally got it back up using one of my favorite musicians, from KY, who is much less anal.

I don't know why my Youtube videos get cropped down so much when I publish them, but it will give you motion sickness. It's better at the end if you can make it.

Dead is dead whether you're in 1,000 parts or 2. I don't condone that type of riding AT ALL, but it's fun to watch and the guy lived and made millions from it. Good times.:D
