View Full Version : Boating and Booze
I know there are some CO's and experienced people on this board that might be able to shed some light on this this.
I know that KY considers waterways to be public places, thus drinking is prohibited. I used to spend lots of time on Herrington and the CO's were VERY strict on alcohol. However, some people say it's ok to drink if it's in a cup. That's not to say drinking doesn't happen, everyone is drinking for the most part, but technically it's illegal.
On the other extreme, I was at Cumberland about a month ago and it was a booze fest on the water. We are tied up in a big cove with many, many other boats and pretty much EVERYONE is drinking. There are 2 CO's in the cove also and if drinking is illegal on the water, their pens must have been out of ink because they weren't writing any tickets. My God I have never seen anything like it. I saw a guy take a drink of a beer while he was driving a boat and the CO was passing right next to him and even waved.
Anyone have any experience in this area? I've been wondering about this every since I got back.

Sounds like you're talking about 76 Falls on Cumberland. I looove going there! Oddly enough, I used to drink and drive like it was second nature when I was younger but I NEVER drank on the water. I've seen the aqua cops arrest people drinking and boating on Cumberland, Dale Hollow, and Herrington. I will agree that they are VERY lax in the ticket writing department on Cumberland though. See any boobage on your trip last month? :D

I MAY have seen some...;) The funniest thing was the guy next to us pulled up his anchor and it had Mardi Gras beads attached to it.:D He said it was the second time that day. Lots of older rich guys with young women on board, you know the routine. I made lot's of "note to self" observations for my later years.:D

I would wager to say after the tragic accident down there last weekend that the laws will be more strictly enforced.

So what's the problem? Sounds like a good day on the lake. It's not like we all have not done it before.

Kentucky and Barkley are always a drunkfest, especially on holidays. Just go to the Rock Quarry and see what I mean.
You have to be doing something pretty outright ignorant to get picked up.

I rarely ever drink on a boat whether I'm the captain or not. To me, there's no more open, visible place to get caught doing something illegal than on a boat. You're asking to get a ticket, IMO. I have plenty of time to drink on dry land.:D

i have a good friend who works the water patrol on cumberland, they will stop you and even arrest you if you are causing problems and being reckless. usually if its in a cup and you are not advertising it you will be ok.but then again they cant get everyone.
