View Full Version : Really Really Bad Start to Overnight Getaway

As most of you read the other day, my wife and I were planning a little overnight getaway. Well, I was loading the stuff in the vehicle a few minutes ago, and that's when it happened. I had put 2 fishing poles in from the rear of the Envoy, then I leaned into the back door to unbuckle the car seats. When I raised up, one of the treble hooks on a crank bait burried itself in the back of my ear. Well, there I hung outside by myself with my rear hanging out the side of the Envoy and my ear firmly attached to the fishing pole, I managed to get to my pocket knife and feel my way around enough to cut the line. Well, the hook is currently burried way past the barb in the back of my ear. I called a friend of mine that is an RN, she is on her way to try to remove it, if she can drive while laughing so hard. She could barely talk on the phone. If that don't work, I guess I'm on my way to the emergency room with my favorite crank bait hanging out of my ear. Here are some pics for your emense enjoyment.

So, how much do you weigh? How tall are you? Did you register yourself for the line class record? I really should move this thread to the fishing forum..;)

Okay, enough of that....Dude, that stinks. Hope your RN friend is able to get it out for you. I watched Roland Martin remove a hook from his finger using a length of fishing line. He wrapped it around the hook, angled the hook back, then gave it a firm yank to remove it. It looked very painful, and your situation looks like it could be even more painful. Best of luck getting it out without a trip to the ER.

I think it looks rakishly handsome. Everybody has holes poked in their ears these days, might as well be a Rapala hanging there.

Here's what my buddy the ER doctor says...grab the hook in the bend with a pair of clamps or needlenose pliers, hold on tight with one hand, and slap it upward HARD with the other.

It sounds gruesome and I've never tried it, but he's done it a thousand times and it's the best way. Some Novacaine in advance would be a big asset, but that means a trip to the ER.

If the barb poked out the other side, then just snip it off and slide the hook back out. Doubt your case is that easy, though.

She got it out. Thank God. It was very painful, if you notice on the first pic you can see the beads of sweat on my forehead. It took her about 20 minutes to work it out, but it's out. Let's hope the rest of the weekend goes better.

Been there done that! You don't have a hair on your butt if you don't funnel a 6 pack and yank that baby out with some rusty Channel locks.:D

Damn that would hurt. You didn't even get it in the fleshy lobe part. That would be the better side of the ear to hook.

You could very likely have just started a new trend with the young'uns out there!!! Seriously though, glad you are alright. I saw a picture somewhere not so long ago (it may have been on here but I don't think it was though) of a guy with a crank bait sank into his eyeball!!! So although I am sure it was very painful...just be thankful it wasn't any worse.

Are you referring to me? I was just making a joke, I ran to the ER like a little girl when I got hooked.

Glad you got it out SGS, I hope my attempt at humor didn't offend you.

Been there, Done that. While fishing a N.A.B.A. tourney on Rough several years ago, I was fortunate enough to plant one of the treble barbs from a Bill Normans crankbait very deeply into my calf. It was deep and itno the muscle, so there was no pushing through and cutting it off. It was failry early in the morning and we had 14+ pounds of fish so there was no way I was leaving for the ER. I cut it off at the bait and left most of the hook hanging out of my leg and fished the remainder of the day. When we got backk to the ramp I let one the guys running the Tourney pull that maneuver. Didnt hurt so bad, but DANGIT son did it ever bleed.

Everything went up from there, thankfully. The only hiccup in the whole trip after that was almost getting sprayed by a skunk. There is a big pond or little lake accross from the cabin we stayed in. I walked down just before dark to try my luck fishing and when I turned the corner there was a skunk standing in the road. Scared me and him both pretty bad, luckilly he took off and let me by. Didn't catch any fish though.
