My good friend, Elmer, is no longer with us. I personally had taken over 500 photos of him over the last few weeks, and genuinely felt as though he was becoming part of my family. My wife apparently did too, as she pointedly asked me why I had more pictures of this buck than my own children, but my obsessions are fodder for a different story at a different time.

Tonight, however, Elmer met his unfortunate end in a bizarre accident involving sharp stick and a stringed contraption. My buddy and his partner got it all on tape, and they're hoping it will make an outdoor show later this fall. :D

Can't post any pictures at this time.

I also managed to arrow my first deer with a recurve today. Despite losing my favorite photo model, I'd still have to say, all in all, it was a fine start to the 2008 Kentucky deer season.

was the buck still in velvet today?

was the buck still in velvet today?

Yep. Still in velvet, but he scraped it up in a few places when he crashed into a downed cedar. Still looks good though. I saw 3 bucks in velvet today, and 2 out. Most of our better bucks are out and have been for a few days, although there is one nice 130" 10 ptr that's still hanging on to his.

I've seen lots in velvet, but I never laid eyes on Elmer, unless it was last season, but, if it was him, he didn't have a double beam.

I looked him over for healed injuries. I thought that a gunshot wound from last year may have led to his NT rack, but he looked fine.

He stunk like nobody's business though.

Stunk as in how? Infection or something else?

I've never killed one this early in the year so I'm not quite sure what normal is for a heat of September deer.

Because it needs to be uploaded to a hunting website first and I think the footae will be on a hunting video and/or show this fall.

Once it gets added to my buddy's sponsor's website, I think I'll get the OK to post up the harvest photos here.

Sorry, but them's the rules, and I'm just a lowly foot soldier in the deer hunting army. :D

I think the only thing that he forgot to name drop was what kind of undies the two of them were wearing. :D

I have to give you kudos for letting someone else whack a deer like that though.

Actually, it wasn't me as much as it was Birddog, who originally put out the camera that located this buck. I told him that it would be much more important to Chris if he could get on and shoot this deer than it would be for either of us. Although I knew Birddog would love to shoot him and I had given him priority if he wanted to shoot it, he graciously deferred the decision to me. I passed it along to Chris, and he got in there and got 'er done.

A great gesture from you both! In todays world of highdollar everything, it isn't often you see this type of courtesy from other hunters. congrats to all that were involved. Soundas like Chris and SgtMaj Simpson will be up to the task while SgtMaj Barteau is deployed.

Awesome story guys and way to scout out a mature buck.....with all these September bucks being killed, it makes sense that the early season is the best time to kill a mature buck before he goes nocturnal and gets rutted up!
