I AM JUST NOW GETTING INTO COON HUNTING. I have a walker female that is 4 years old and I got a 2 year old black and tan yesterday that is also female. I took them out hunting tonight and the walker treed a possum. My black and tan followed her up on the tree. I shot the possum out and whooped them with it. I turned em loose again and the same thing happened again. I shot the possum out and whooped them with it. We then called it a night.

Is what I did a bad thing by shooting the possums out and whooping the dogs? I have no shock collars to use. Please help me.

Hell yes, you should have whooped them good but don't shoot out off game for them. Buy a good book on training coon hounds or go with exoerienced hunters. Your female is likely too old to break, unless you use electric. Most people have young dogs hunt only with straight older dogs. BTW--I think fur taking season is out, I wouldn't be posting on the internet about nocking out possums?

I was told by a guy that has coon hunted for a while that if you have young dogs that are new to coon hunting that it is alright for the young dogs to tree on possums but you don't want them to get use to the idea that it is always good for the dog to tree possums. If it just happens every now and then it is alright but you want to break them of it, if treeing possums starts to become a problem.

So, would it be OK for a young dog to run a deer every now and then as long as he didn't get used to the idea???? Don't let your dog have off game, when they're young is when you teach them right or wrong.

I just purchased John Wick's Walk With Wick Tree Dog Encyclopedia from Wick Outdoor Works. It has several great ideas about breaking dogs from deer and possum. It also containes a lot of information that is extreamly valuable to a new coon hunter. As a new coon hunter myself I highley recomend this book. For $34.00 you can't beat it.

The best way to beak off opossums is in your yard, not a hunting situation. Catch one, bring it in the yard, and then use your own method to correct the dog after it shows interest. BTW, I reccomend Vickie Lamb's book, The dynamics of hound training.

You could have been teaching the dog not to tree at all. Maybe he thought he was getting "whooped" for treeing and not just for the opossum. Gotta be careful when you and how you discipline a young dog so he don't get confused. Get him with some seasoned dogs and he will learn what to run and what not to. He may hate opossums worse than ever now and want to catch every one he comes across.

Why even worry about it? It's not like there's a fur market anymore. I, for one, just enjoy hearing the dogs. Unless you're into the whole competition hunt scene, a tree is a tree is a tree. Just go out there and enjoy the beautiful music of the hounds. Whatever is sitting on a limb is immaterial. Unless it's a cat-then it's a bonus. They're always in season

The best way I have found to break a dog off a possum is when they tree it shake it out to them (in season of course) and as soon as the dog goes to grab it shock them with an Tri-Tronics. It makes the dog think that the possem is hurting them insted of you. After two or three most hound will not mess with them anymore.
