Just picked up a Remington model 7 youth .243. Any suggestions on what round would work best to put down a deer at approx. 100 yards max would be appreciated.

I like, Remington Core-Lokt 100 gr. I've shot several deer with this load and it does a great job staying together, when it hits bone. It has good accuracy also.

I prefer these: 243 Win PRC243WC 100 Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded PSP
or for ultimate devistation: 243 Win PRSC243WA 90 Scirocco Bonded
The Bonded bullets retain weight better.

been using winchester "white box" from wal-mart in 100 gr.

some people laugh that i shoot a .243 at the age of 26... i ain't had a deer yet that i shot at get away.

.243 with 100 gr, decent proximity around kill zone = dead deer

I shoot factory 100 gr SP in my .243. Remington, Federal and Winchester will all group less than 3" at 200 yds and would do better if I had a stronger scope.

FWIW, I'm 34 and just bought a .243 that I plan to hunt deer with. I was using a .30-06. I got it to build up skills/confidence. I'd like to eventually feel confident in my shot to use my .22-250. Why?, probably much the same reason that people want to get 3 shots in the center circle. Its just that my target can move.

We use Winchester 100gr SilverTips in my daughters 243. She has done a number on several deer with them. I like the 243... light recoil & accurate. I use a 270 but would'nt hesitate to use a 243 for deer in this region.

My son has shot several deer with his single shot .243. We used standard remington shells.

100 gr. 243 CoreLocts and SilverTips will kill any deer in Kentucky that needs killed. Keep the shot within the shooter's effective range and you'll be dragging a deer.

I use the 95 gr. ballistic tip Wincherter supremes. haven't shot a deer yet but My dad uses them in his .270 and they left a basket ball size exit wound. I'm shooting them in my Browning BLR with a Nikon 3x9 and I get great groups at 100. The trigger is a little stiff, my eyes, and my nerves wont let me, or I'd shoot 200.

Thanks for that link Raven. I just bought my son a Remington model 700 adl youth 243 today at Wal-mart. After going to that link, I found out that I can get a $40 rebate on this gun. It was already on clearance for $275 that makes me having $235 in it.:)

Dude!.....I'd never laugh at you. I'm 42 years old and I hunt with 243 in rifle and Encore pistol. In my book the 243 can't be beat! I showed a deer I killed with my 243 to the landowner and he said "my lord son, what did you shoot that with...a shotgun!" The Federal Prem. 100 gr. left an exit wound that looked like a slug went through it.

Let 'em laugh, 48 y.o. and would not trade my Remington Model 700, .243 cal. for anything. To Date, not a deer lost. it won't knock them over sideways, but it's as effective as anything else if you put it where it's supposed to be !

My Brother-in-law handloads my shells with Nosler Ballistic tips for me. Can't recall the exact specs but they are wicked.

Well Biz just got her new Model 7 for her birthday, she seemed very excited. I grabbed a box of 100gr Remington Core Lokt, we'll see how well they shoot but realize trial and error is in order with ammo. She was consistently in a pie plate with an iron sight 30/30 at 50 yards, the Remington has a 3x9x32 so hoping she'll be comfortable at 100 yards+, near the max of most of our Bracken Co. stands.

Thanks for all the insight. If anybody has advise on how to keep an 11 year old girl in to hunting, I'm all ears.....:D.
