Any suggestions, shooting Benelli Super Nova w/ a 20" barrel. I patterened it w/ sever loads the other day at 25 yards and was less than impressed...until I shot the Winchester Premium Magnum 3 1/2 turkey load. WOW! I took the head off the target at 25 yards when nothing else I shot was giving me more than 2-3 in a 3" group. I was curious if anyone else had a shot I should try to trump this one? I am curious about the heavier than lead loads. Any opinions?

Depending on what kind of choke you are using, I would step back down to a Winchester 3" Double X Magnum #5. It's got 2oz of lead, so you're not losing much knock-down and you'll save your shoulder too :). I've shot the Winchester 3 1/2" High Velocities out of my Charles Daily with a 655 Compen choke, and was very disappointed. With the Double X's, however, I was putting between 25 and 35 pellets in the kill zone at 30 yards. My gun also has a longer barrell, which well more than likely affect the pattern, but I'd say it's worth a try at least. Killed my first Rio in Kansas this year with that load.

I will second the winchester loads. Shoot winchester supreme 3" #5 out of my 11-87 with a .640 hastings choke and I throw a nice patern out to 40 yards. Dont really want to shoot that far, but I leveled my bird at 42 steps this past spring when he started to get alittle twitchy like he was wantin to leave.

Or, if you really want to see what your gun can do, you could allways jump on the NITRO train. I jumped on board a few years ago and never looked back! Plan on spending about $7 bucks a pop, but you get what you pay for. It turned my gun from a 35 yd max to a possible 50+ yd gun if need be. I dont like to take shots past 40 yds, but with NITRO's, you will have some added insurance, and to me thats means alot.:D

I concur with the Winchester Double X 3" #5's.....they patterned nicely at 35yds with a 0.640 Hastings in my Rem 870 Exp The 3.5"'s had me thinking about a trip to the X-ray room and I am not that old

Exactly! There is no better load than Nitro. I've used the 12 gauge 4x5x7 3.5" load in a Benelli SBE and a Browning Gold. They are truly worth the price. This year I purchased a 20 gauge barrel for my Encore and some nitro straight 7's. AWESOME! All of these loads are heavy shot and they will perform! Get yourself a good choke and some Nitro's and your gun will be a death stick!

keep trying loads until you find one that works well, my mossberg 835 really likes Win Supreme 1 7/8 oz #6's. Can't even hit paper past 25 yard with 4s or 5s, but i will kill most birds within 40 yards with the 6s. hope this helps some.

All guns are different, so it takes some experimenting. My 870 Supermag likes an Indian Creek choke and Hevi-13 #6 shot. It's a true 50 yd. gun.

I love the cheap Remington Nitro. I have a 870 Express Super Mag with a Kicks Gobblin Thunder choke. I drop my first tom of the year at 50 yards this past spring with this ammo. Piece of cake. THe second was at 35 yards. No problem!

The same thing with rifle ammo. The remington core lok express (cheap) kills a buck and usually a doe every year.

I use the same. Remington Nitro with 870. My 12 year old put down his first turkey with a 20g this year at 40 yards.

i also use nitro ammo...i shoot a browning 10ga. bps pump with the rhino choke and 4-5-7 shot load with 2.5oz...of shot.....deadly. i patterned this gun out to seventy yards ,,,, of course i would never shoot a bird that far...but at fifty yards you can take their heads off..........a little pricey but i likem...:)

Check out the tss pattern I posted. The tss is 18 grams/cc while the nitro is awesome it is only 13 grams/cc. I think lead is around 8 grams/cc. Go to the Tungsten Super Shot website if you are interested. I bet the Nitro company will start loading their shells with them.

I patterned some Fiocchi from Gander last spring and they do pretty well. Cheap too.

But I have to stick to Winchester Supreme.
