I'm taking a trip from Lexington to Williamsburg this Friday afternoon. Are there any shooting ranges close to I75 along this stretch?

There is one in Keno! Southern Pulaski co.((You would have to leave 75 at Mt. vernon, then take 461 to hwy 80 on into Somerset, then go south on hwy 27 out of Somerset and through Burnside. I can't remember how many miles out of Burnside there is Keno rd. on your right.))You could follow hwy 27 south to through 92 Mcquery co., then cut over through falls rd. hwy 92 to Whitley co. to go on to Williamsberg. Maybe too far out of your way for your taste though. It used to be a really nice range, until too many idiots started shooting the place up. The first time I was there it was really nice and clean. The last time (several years ago) it had been vandlized pretty bad. Trash cans shot up, signs, benches. It just made me sick to think of a rare public place like that ruined by a bunch of low lifes! As far as I know it is still there. Maybe you could mapquest it or something, I can't remember enough to give you accurate directions any further. Any other ranges that I know about are all private, and it would not be my place to invite you sorry. If you should happen to check out Keno, and if you don't care, pm me or just put up a post let us know what kinda shape it's in.

There is a range at Laurel Lake. from exit #38 follow the signs to Holly Bay. Go past there, across the dam, and range is 1/2 mile on the right. From exit #25, follow signs to Grove Marina then the sign to Holly Bay. You'll see range on left before the dam.

The range at Laurel Lake isn't too far off the highway. I think its closer to exit 25 (2nd Corbin Exit) than it is to exit 38 (2nd London exit). But the drive from the London exit will be more scenic.

Another option you have is that you can shoot anywhere in the Daniel Boone National Forest--tack a target up on an old log and start shooting. If you get off on the Livingston exit (exit 49) and take a right, I believe you're in the forest once you get past the gas stations. If not, its not much farther. All in all, it would be less than a mile.

Good idea, but use caution shooting at Cromer's ridge. Licenced vehicles may still be allowed, if thats the case allot of people probably still four wheel there.

RE: The Berea range; does public mean free?

I think I found the range at Laurel Lake ("Whitman Branch Range") and it appears to be free. Best I can figure, it is close to 36.94579N, 84.26326W, which is about 1/2 hour from I75. Am I close?

whitman branch is only 15 or 20 mins from i75 if you get off at exit 25.take a right off the interstate and go to hwy 1193 turn right and follow signs toward holly bay you will see the sign turn on left a little before laurel lake spillway.

Whitman Branch is a public range and it is free. It is pretty small however and is pretty popular and often busy. They have even added public restrooms in the last year or so.

It's best to go to Whitman Branch in the morning. In the evening the sun is right in your eyes.

Thanks again for the tips. Is it a through-the-tube range or is it open?

The last time I was there, it was open.
