Finally broke down and bought a new Savage 93R17-FV last Saturday. I have looked at different models for a couple weeks and ran across this one at a good price. It's black synthetic with the blued heavy bull barrel and accu-trigger.
I've topped it with a 3-9-40mm Tasco World Class scope with Leoupold rings....for now but may upgrade the optics later. I had bought two of these scopes back a few years ago at Uncle Lees on sale for like $32.00 each. I put one on a muzzleloader and had this one stuck back for just such a need. I honestly dont have any complaints....its clear and holds true but kinda like to try one of the tatical scopes produced for the 17 with drop compensator.
I sighted it in late Sunday evening and all I can say is... wow. I started at 25yds for initial adjustments and was pretty much dead center to just a hair low of a 1 1/2" inch sized stick-on dot. I then went to 50yds and was maybe 3/4" high but still grouping at the edge of the dot. I then moved out to 100yds and was dead on. I'm no long range shooter by any means but on sandbags I put 15 shots with most cutting each other at a 100yds.
This is my first experience with the 17 HMR and I'm shooting the CCI Gamepoint 20gr ammo. Looking at balistic and trajectory info... it looks to be very minor differences between 17gr vs. the 20gr bullets. I guess the biggest difference is the 20gr is 2475fps and the 17gr is 2550fps... either way their really zipping along for a rimfire round. The CCI Gamepoint is suppose to be a mushrooming type bullet made for small game. I'll have to try it out on squirrels and see how they do.
Wish I had bought one of these a long time ago.

I'm looking at buying one but I'm in the market for a pistol! I've been looking at the .17 since they came out just haven't coughed up the money or found exactly what I want. I too would like to pick off some squirrels, crows, birds, turtles, and snakes with it! I plan on getting the Taurus Tracker with 6 1/2" barrel. and maybe topping it with a scope. haven't decided on what scope yet.

I tested the CCI Gamepoint 20 gr & Hornady V-Max 17 gr on squirrels. The V-max.... all I can say.. its a destructive round. I really was'nt trying for a head shot but I hit at the base of the neck & the angle of the shot... went basically down the spine. Pretty much like a zipper on the hide... what a mess.
The CCI Gamepoint... done very well on a shoulder shot. Went in & out...exit wound was about the size of a dime or less. Not much meat damage on the rest of the squirrel. This is definitely the round I'll use on bobcats.

I shot a yote looking straight at me at about 40 yards with the CCI ammo. She went about 10 yards. Not running but trying to get back on her feet. Not that I think it is the perfect round for yotes but I really like the .17 for a good all around rim fire round.

i'm new on here and just had to put my two cents in...lol..i own the hmr also by savage as well as a mach2...by savage...guess i'm just a savage kind of guy...anyway i love both of mine. they are both tack drivers and the mach2 is the way to go for squirrells...very flat,,imobilizes them little critters quick and not nearly as much damage as the hmr,not to mention the ammo is a little cheaper.....also seems that the muzzle report isn't as bad as a regular .22 rimfire....on my gun anyways....all i can say is everyone should atleast shoot these little boogers and see what they think....you just cant go wrong.....:)

I was pretty much set on a Stevens 310 heavy barrel when I made up my mind. Savage & Stevens are the same gun minus the accu-trigger and a little cheaper at $194. However when it came time to buy...the Savage 93R17-FV was only $201 and for 7 bucks I got the accu-trigger and the bull barrel. I'm glad I went the Savage route... I really like having the adjustable trigger.
I would'nt be hesitant on the Stevens and the 310 model without the bull barrel was $170. Another one that would be a good one for less money would be NEF/H&R Sportster in 17hmr. I've seen those priced for $139 -150. Their a single shot and a little on the heavy side... but a shooter from what I've read. Marlins are priced close to the Savages but all in all...were not talkin that much difference in cash between any of the guns.
CZ and the Savage Classic were wood stocked... beautiful guns. Their around the $350 range and a little more than I wanted to invest at this time. Any of these guns will need to be scoped and rings. Figure another $50 dollars or more pending what route you go...and thats figuring on the cheap side with a BSA, Bushnell, Simmons or Tasco.
