Restoration zone 14 co. Johnson,Martin,Pike,Floyd, Magoffin,Breathitt,Knott Perry,Letcher, Clay, Leslie, Harlan, Knox and Bell. 10 buffer co. Lawrence, Elliott, Morgan, Wolfe, Lee, Owsley, Jackson, Laurel, Whitley and McCreary. Anything outside these areas are suitable for framing
birdman..........your quote......" anything outside these areas are suitable for framing" " elk season is in"?.........i am talking about the counties of KY and not the bourder counties of other states..............let's just say one would happen to move into nelson/larue county area; he/she is free to shoot????????........provided that you purchase a elk tag?????
ez, starting with the 2003 deer season, you only need a deer tag to harvest either sex elk in any county in KY, except the original 14 and the 10 border counties. The only rule is you must call the Dept before you move it.
how many counties have they moved into other than the original 14??????[}:)][?][:D]...ez
I know of 2 small herds in Estill co, God help'em.

ez next year if their in the counties you asked about their open game. And from what the boys say their moving out on a daily bases. The herd is growing faster than anticipated.

I'd like to get this reversed, but don't think we have a snowballs chance in hell in doing so.
does anyone here feel that that needs to change??? elk don't know they have stepped outside their boundries and why even have a designated elk season when you can kill them like deer outside their range??????????.......so outside their desinated area they are as they are in the state of Virginia.........antlered /cow and in the deer family.............KILLEM like they want us to kill the rest of the herd ( does )...........WHAT A BUNCH OF B S.........and still bring them in to replenish the herd from other states at the cost of us hunters and stand an even greater risk of the bad word and i will print it this time......... C W D!!!!!!!!!!.............
why have an elk progam??........at one time i was really in favor of this program but now i am getting some big doubts
Note........in the above comments i would have liked to have used a few more descriptive words but i know the rules........... P .Oed...ez

Farm Bureau has a big part to play in this issue. When the program started the dept. agreed not to let elk get into farm country, because of the damage that would be done to crops. Farm Bureau fought this program hard, And as its been said on here before, food plots attract wildlife. The areas these aniamls are going to has a tremendous amount of food plots or crops. If the food was more plentiful in the mountains they wouldn't be leaving, or at least not as many. I'm not gigging you Multi just stating a fact. We must have alterative food sources for wildlife in EASTERN KENTUCKY. Our million acres of public land is the perfect place for this to happen.

Been elk hunting in Colorado once...didn't see any corn fields on the side of that mountain and the elk didn't notice. My guess is that it's a natural thing for these elk to migrate back WEST, from where they came.
Elk, like deer are primarily browse eaters. A deer will eat 60% browse per day even when he has crops or acorns to choose from.

According to the biologist that presented the program to us, the elk were grazers and not so much browers.

I like the rule myself. My nephew has some on his property fairly regularly & he is outside the zone. I spent a lot of bucks bowhunting elk in CO & now I may get some elk meat for a much smaller investment. There is not enough area available state0wide to have elk all over the state. We all know that & we all knew that going in.
my real "elk" is that "NO TAG REQUIRED" outside the 14 county zone.. at least an elk tag should be required to kill an elk anywhere in the state of Ky...........why should i pay ten dollars just to get a chance when others who are close and not in the zone just need to purchase a deer tag..........B.S.................ez

Ralph, it's good to see you are on here regularly. I swear I am going to join the KBA as soon as I get time. Post your mailing address on here as I have lost it again and I'll send the 10 bucks.
Ed[EZ] you have a very valid point. I guess I fall into that category as I have bought several Fall Archery Turkey Tags....and have yet to fill one. But hey!...I keep trying and the odds are feasible. The turkeys are there just they have good eyes.
The bottom line is that my dollars went to a Dept. that oversees what I love!!

I sent my 10 bucks and 5 more for the buck or spotted doe competition. I even took it to the mail box with a stamp!
OK here we go again. We pay enough as it is. You guys who want to pay more just go ahead send annonomous donations or send me the money I will manage it better than the state. I can not believe how many times I hear well this tags to cheap, why no extra tag. Lets see Fishing, Hunting, Spring Turkey, Fall Turkey, Fall bow turkey, migratory bird, Deer tag, extra deer tag, duck, trout (this one I understand because of current trout stocking efforts) Really we should have coyote tags, squirrel tags, rabbit tags, crow tags, and heck quail tags. They are all good animals too. I hate all the tags already. Then people complain hunting is getting to be a rich mans sport. TAXES TAXES TAXES. Liberals why don't you just pay more taxes and go ahead and give them your guns too. Do you all have kids to pay for yet? Do you make so much money that another 30 bucks just doesn't hurt? 30 bucks can buy a lot. You people need to think about how much money we already pay in hunting taxes before you clammer for another tax. Every year I buy turkey tags I go out 1 day don't get a turkey. There should be an option tag you buy the option to take an animal if you take it you actually pay more. In fact you all should be complaining about all the taxes already in place. Deer are public (the department does not have to do anything for them) why are we paying for tags. Right because once a tax is in place the department can find somthing to do with your money and it's harder to repeal a tax. Elk have reached the desired goal and growing faster than they wanted and spreading further than they wanted why should we pay taxes to complete a public service. I look forward to taking an ELK if I'm so fortunate and relish the idea of not having to buy a speical permit (see they want them dead and they don't want people to not take the shot because the don't have a tag I know it's not your plan but you obviously don't try to grow soy beans either).
No one is stopping you from paying more if you think it's worth it go ahead just don't clammer that the rest of us need to pay more too. Unless of course you want a political debate. I wish there was a spell check on here.

I'll get an elk perished real quick if I see one next year. I don't care about elk tags. I just added up that I will spend $100.00 this year in licenses and tags. Now I don't really mind since it is towards my number 1 hobby and goes toward F&W advancement, but you let an elk in front of me opening day of gun and its going to be deader than something thats real dead in a hurry...elk tags or not. As long as I'm legal I don't care. Elk jerky for everyone!!!
If someone wants to pay extra to do what the department was supposed to do themselves, so be it. Let them donate the money to the archery in schools program or something if it will make them feel better.
As I look at it we already paid for elk tags outside the restoration area when we flipped the bill for importing them.
I guess I better get vaulted ceilings for that shoulder mount. [:D]
Did someone actually say Nelson county?
