In the Remington 700 platform I'd pick one of the heavy barreled, synthetic stocked (with the bedding block stock) models in .300 Winchester magnum. Then I'd put a Leupold, Burris or Nikon scope on top of it, probably a variable power that topped out around 14 to 16X

700 BDL action .308 Winchester, topped with Leupold Mk. 4 8.5-25x50 or Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 PM II , McMillan M40A1 stock. ETC....

Depends on what you plan on shooting at are we talking deer or yotes? I'd go with what these guys said for deer or larger game but for smaller game I'd go with the .204 ruger cartridge!

A .204 at 1,000 yards? I figured that little bullet would get blown over into the next county before it made it to 1,000. Shows what I know.

Good advice here other than BDL action.

I'm a fan of the .204 but i'm with AUK, may as well shoot a .20 gauge at that range.

according to winchester.com the least drop I found was in the .243 WSSM (25.5" @ 500 yards).

However, the .243 WSSM isn't available in the model 700 Remington. .270 is one of the flatter shooting big guns that's widely available.

I was figureing on a good calm day I didn't know youall wanted to figure in a 10 MPH cross wind. If thats the case I'd stick to the .270.

If you plan on shooting beyond 300 yds. You'll be hard pressed to find a factory remington to hold suitable accuracy for the job. Not saying they don't exist, but there few & far between these days. going straight factory, your money is better spent & your odds go way up buying a savage.A good rule of thumb for a 1000 yd cartridge is a gun shooting 1 inch or very, very close to it at 300yds. which in most cases means reloading. If going the remmy route what guncat said is going to be your best bet. I've seen a few sendero's in 300winnie shoot under 2inches at 300 with factory stuff & down to 1.25 with reloads shooting berger 210 VLD's. As far as caliber I wouldn't go any smaller than 6.5 or 7mm, with the .30's being an excellent choice as well. At those distances a flat trajectory is far less important than good bullets with high B.C's, which are needed for optimum wind bucking power, which is the enemy of accuracy, not distance. At those distances you'll be adjusting the scope for the range & wind, which means lots of range time getting to know MOA adjustment's at varying distances & wind conditions. Don't plan on going cheap on the glass either. parralex adjustment is a must at those distances. Like guncat mentioned, Nikon, Leupold, bushnell, Burris all make quality entry level long range scopes that you can pick up for around $600.00. reliable windage & elevation tracking is a must for anything much past 350-400 yards. Good luck & good shooting!!

As far as I know, nothing cheap about 500-1000 yard guns. Ammo on the other hand will prolly need to be hand loads tuned and tweeked for your gun.

If you are dead set on a Remington factory rifle, I notice they make a Sendero in 300 RUM. That might be a good start.

I just had a 700 action customized in .204 ruger. I already had the action & still spent just a tad over 2k just on the trigger, barrel, stock(wich was used) & gunsmith. not to mention what I've spent on reloading supplies.
