anyone ever touch base with the biologist that's doing the appalachian grouse research study to see just what this fellow is coming up with. back in may I called the Dept of fish & wildlife to see what info they had on ky's season & they mentioned this fellow who ever he might be & said when they got his info they would send it to me. I've yet to see anything. Is he our small game biologist for the state. Birdman I read what you wrote as far as them wanting to use this report for ammo to shorten the season to dec. 31st. Gee, I would get about a whole 12 days to grouse hunt between firearm seasons for deer & the fact that I usually only get to hunt on the weekends like most grouse hunters. I was under the impression that the first report that came out lead to believe that hunting pressure had little or no effect on the grouse population & that the # 1 predator was raptors. If thats the case then why aren't we spending money to improve habitat that would help protect them from such predators instead of paying some biologist to tell us what we(any small game hunter)already knows. It's not like we have a shortage of public land to manage in the eastern part of the state. Any way I 'll quit babbling, but any info on this fellow & what his operation is exactley would be appreciated.....grousegunner

Birdman & Grouseguy have lots of data on this subject.
You want to take your dogs out next week and let them run? I'm going to get a few birds off a guy down on Ash Grove if your interested.

Talked with him yesterday. Scott Freidhoff, is his name, dawm nice guy. I've got everything that's happened on his study. I hope to get the final results within the next two weeks. Have you joined the Cyper Hunters yet? Back to the study, the statement you made on that study is exactly the way we felt when they started. But there has been some good come from this study. This is the first time any work has been done on what thay call the Sountern Appalachian Mountain Grouse. What they have proven at least in my mine is that habitat and raptors are the problem but also many other aniamls snakes, coon, coyotes, fox, even rabbits. As for killing Mature birds, hawks because of the lack of habitat. As far as nesting and hatches go, lack of food sources. I feel if the information is used as it should be, habitat work will be done on our public lands as it should have been long ago, (cuttings etc.) because its been proven that cuttings helps all game as well as the grouse. The HEALTHY FORESTS plan that the president enacted a couple weeks ago, can do nothing but help this matter. Grousegunner there's a meeting in Winchester on Oct. 3rd. at 9am at the forest service building. This concerns the long term plan on the Daniel Boone National Forest and the management of it. Try and make it over.

Birdman,
thanks for the info. as for oct.3rd, I'll be chasing ol mr. ruff up in wisconsin. won't be back until the weekend, but any time there's any sort of public hearing that could use voices & opinions please let me know, I would love to participate & give my two cents worth. as far as the cyber hunters go consider that a done deal. seems well worth $10.00.Did he give any insight as far as how it's going to affect our season ?

gunner, I'm thinking around mid week. I'll watch the weather and hope it cools down. I was thinking of taking them to the BGSL at Wilmore.
We have a preserve license there and can shoot. I'll call you at the 1st of the week.
