Use the search button. This topic comes up about every other month and there is literally hundreds of post about which ones to use for deer. It will help you decide there is a ton of information in there.

I use a Howa 1500 in 7mm Mag and I love it. I shoot 150 gr. winchesters and have taken well over twenty deer with it. The only deer that I have had to run was a doe I shot at 420 yards approx. and I didn't allow enough for a crosswind but the damage was enough for her to only run 25 yards or so before I could get a second shot in her to drop her cold. In my opinion the 7mm Mag is one the best magnum cartridges. Although recoil can be stiff, the confidence in knowing that a misplaced shot wont necessarily spell disaster is a plus. A well placed shot with a 7mm Mag will drop a deer in its spot 95% of the time. The 7mm MAg is also the flattest shooting of the "old" mags.

i like a .308 myself, doesn't matter if im 30 yards or 330 yards, in the woods or in the open fields it does the same amount of damage.....and its accurate.........just my 2 cents.

I use a .30-06 I like them well, I would even consider a .270. The .270 is what I was really wanting when I was looking for a different rifle but a buddy of mine sold me this .30-06 when he was going through a divorce way to cheap to pass up.

I have a Remington 700 BDL in .30-06, love it. I also have a Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag, and love it! I have never had a problem with either gun or calibur. I have found that shooting Hornaday 139 grain boat tail soft points out of the 7mm gives me the best groups, does not have a lot of recoil, and kills deer without alot of excess damage.

There are lots of great deer rifles out there, my dad still uses and swears by his old Winchester 94 .30-30. Deer rifles are like trucks, one is probably as good as another, but we all have our opinions!

I don't see as you need the power of the 7mm mag but thats just my opinion. unless you some day plan on going on an elaphnt hunt! I like the .243 or .270 both have just as good a range and both will take down a deer just as good and won't take out near as much meat. I have made shots at 10 yards with them and one 250+ yard shot with a .270 and all the deer droped just the same. But its your shoulder not mine!

bullet design & placement dictate meat damage. some bullets expand really fast like nosler ballistic tips & some take a little more flesh resistance, such as an accubond.
