This past sring as I said in my introduction post was my first turky hunt. Well this is how it went. On the second day of the season me and my brother in-law set out to the woods at the base of his farm. I was sitting about seven yards inside the wood line where they was a few bushes that would break up my out line. My brother in-law was sitting against the tree over looking a small ravein. We would take turns calling because he said that it would appear to the turkys that we was moveing. But anyways I had been there all morning. When suddenly I saw some movement in the brush about 60 yards out. At first I thought that it was a hen and a tom. But when they got closer to where I could see them better it was a tom and a jake. The tom started comeing right at me and the jake went off to the side. So I raise my remington 12 guage and waited for him to come in range and give me a clean kill shot. When I was able to take the shot he was around 15 yards away. Anyway I missed I mean big time I saw some leaves fly the the bird just took off in flight. I jumped up and ran out of the woods to try and see where he went but he was long gone.:eek::eek::(

Even though I did not get a bird I still had a really good time. I think that I am hooked.I plan to try again this fall. I just feel lucky to have seen not just one bird but two my first time out. My brother in-law told me that a lot of fist time turky hunters don't even to get to see a bird or at least not get one to come that close.:D:D:D

Happens to us all! I was skunked this year for the first time in a decade thanks to two misses!

Does anyone have any pointers on fall hunting. I hear it is harder to hunt than in the spring. does decoys work during the fall as they do in the spring. I anyone could offer some pointers I would apreciate it much. Good day to everyone.:D

I love fall turkey, and I dont think its harder than spring. One way to hunt them is to break a flock of birds up and call them back together. I swear this works. The kee kee is a good call to know in the fall, and it makes that boss hen think one of her flock has sliped off and got lost. I have had success hunting food sources "i,e" oaks and makeing feeding sounds, scratching, clucks ect.. Roosting a flock is also a good call. I carry a single hen decoy with me, it just gives them something to look at. If your getting into turkey hunting their are several books out there that have good info and the NWTF magazine allways has good tips in addition to the tips you get on sites like this. Good luck...

I wouldn't worry about the miss...happens to everyone at one point or another. Plus now you have a reason to get back out there and redeem yourself :)
