I am new to turkey hunting as mater of fact this past spring was my first turkey hunt. My brother in- law has a small farm in Hennry county so he took me turky hunting out there. Just one question though how are you supose to hit those small heads with a 12 gauge? Pleas let me know and I wil tell you about the two that got away.:D:D

1. Select choke. Full, extra full, etc. Try your factory full first. I think a lot of people throw good money away buying all these fancy choke tubes that are stainless and ported, etc. I kill effectively often with a 12 gauge Beretta factory full.

2. Select shot size (#5, #6) and shell length (3", 3 1/2"). I shoot Winchester 3 1/2", #5.

3. Setup turkey head targets at varying distances (20 yds, 40 yds, etc).

4. Pattern your gun with different sizes of shot, payload weight and maybe even different chokes. Shoot from the position you expect to take the bird from.

5. Aim just above the beard (not the head) and get your pattern to have as many impacts within the kill zone as possible.

Your natural tendency is to pull up when you shoot due to poor mechanics in most people. You should not be putting the bead on the head, rather you should be aiming at the base of the neck. I always aim 2-3" above the beard. This way, you have more accurate killing potential and will not hit the breast and ruin meat.

Patterning your gun is a MUST. It is a pain in the ass at times and can get expensive with running through shells. But you MUST do it. Lots of people do not and then wonder why they cannot connect. Again, poor mechanics and failure to realize your most effective pattern. Patterning improves confidence and mechanics as well.
