is there anything that you would fear if you had to spend the night on the ground in the middle of the woods in Kentucky?

Some of the strange sounds that I end up hearing are enough to give me the chills. I just wish that I could figure out what makes a lot of the sounds that I hear at night in the woods.

Sure. Skunks.

Not around here. I've done it many times.

If I lived where the bears have taken up residence, I might be concerned.

Sure. Rodents in the sleeping bag.

A buddy of mine was hiking and camping with a group up on the Continental Divide. They were up high and encountered some grizzly tracks, apparently a lot of them. That night they were all a bit nervous, trying to get some sleep and keeping one eye open for bears, and my buddy suddenly awoke to a stirring in his sleeping bag. He rolled over and inadvertently squeezed some little rodent between his thighs. It retaliated by biting the first thing available, which was a testicle. My buddy started screaming (like a man having his testicles bitten) and fighting, trying to get unzipped and away from this awful unseen thing and finally he got out of his sleeping bag, and the little varmint escaped. He stood there and looked around, and all he saw were empty sleeping bags scattered down the mountain. All his friends were high-tailing it down the mountain, leaving him to his gruesome fate. Clearly they were proponents of the "survival of the fittest" theory, and they put it to good use.

They thought he was mauled by a grizzly when he was only having his nuts gnawed by a mouse ,which frankly is just about as bad, from my way of thinking.

Remember you only have to out run at least one person while being chased by a Grizzly......lol......Everyone thought he was being attacked and they high tailed it.....Just like I would have probably done in their position...... Unless it was my family involved, I'd stay to help defend them in a heart beat......

Didn't the guy on Surviorman or Man vs. Wild say something about this subject? I believe that it was something to the effect of making some sort of ridge around where you were going to sleep. That a snake wouldn't crawl over the hump or something like that...Maybe someone else who saw the show can add to this....

Most poison spiders are more likely to be found by your house than out in the woods,I feel safer sleeping on the ground out in the woods more than in a motel by some big city, man is more of a danger than anything else, although a mouse biting my testicles would run a close 2nd.:D

Ants are the worst for me. I went backpacking one time and set up camp kind of late. By the time I got ready to roll my sleeping bag out, it was dark. I cleared some rocks out of the way to make a smooth spot and crawled in my bag. Pretty soon I could feel something crawling all over my neck and face. I guess I must of uncovered an ant nest when I moved the rocks. They didn't exactly bite, but it wasn't real comfortable having them crawling all over me. I've also had skunks walk through my camp Haven't been sprayed, but it makes for some tense moments!

This isn't exactly a Kentucky story but for my 21st birthday I went camping with some friends at Myrtle Beach. After a long night of festivities, I woke up and needed to releive myself in the worst way. Well we weren't very close to the bath house and I couldn't wait so I went behind the site and went. All of a sudden my leg felt like it was on fire. I looked down and discovered that I was standing in a Fire Ant mound and they were coming up my leg. After hollering and yelling I used the only thing handy :D and sprayed them off. I came back into camp to my buddies laughing there #$$ off. Those little ants pack a hell of a punch.

Syphilis - Symptoms

Syphilis develops in four stages, each with a different set of symptoms.

Syphilis - Exams and Tests (http://health.yahoo.com/sexualhealth-diagnosis/syphilis---exams-and-tests/healthwise--hw195224.html)
Syphilis - Topic Overview (http://health.yahoo.com/sexualhealth-overview/syphilis---topic-overview/healthwise--hw195073.html)

Primary stage

During the primary stage of syphilis (http://health.yahoo.com/sexualhealth-symptoms/syphilis/healthwise--sts15389.html), a sore (chancre (http://health.yahoo.com/article/healthwise--hw195323/)) develops at the site where the bacteria entered the body. . . . .

In men, a chancre often appears in the genital area, usually (but not always) on the penis.

Some of the strange sounds that I end up hearing are enough to give me the chills. I just wish that I could figure out what makes a lot of the sounds that I hear at night in the woods.

Without going into alot of details (because it is embarrasing) I managed to get lost while bowhunting a certian, rather large piece of public property for the first time. It was a evening hunt and I came out after dark. Well on my way out I realized my truck wasnt where I thought it should be. So I decided it would be safest and in my best interest to spend the night. It was mid october so, it warmed up in the middle of the day got pretty cool at night. So there were still a few ticks and some snakes. But by the time morning came, I had caught a little sleep and nothing had bothered me all night. The next morning I found my way out pretty easily, my truck was about 150 yards from where I thought it was supposed to be.

After that I started carrying a cigarette lighter and extra flashlight batteries with me.

It is a very eerie feeling being lost and knowing that noone knows where you are.

Why sleep on the ground with all the critters???

When ya can sleep in the air.

This hammock you enter from the bottom and has a bug proof netting over the top.

The second pic shows the rain proof cover over the top of the hammock.

I have spent 2 weeks in this hammock hiking the deep woods of
Mammoth cave park.

It only weighs about 4 pounds.

"Trust Me" wont like you guys picking on his kin. Lol! I think that is where I have seen that photo before.

I have been know to be alittle jumpy at night around livestock that I don't know. As a kid, I coon hunted with my Grandfather, he was a lifelong farmer and had all kinds of places to go. He knew alot of people, and all the ground around from years of hunting or working. He also knew who and where the bad bulls were, but I didn't have that luxury. It would make for a good story telling night, I think he liked that as much as he liked to hunt. I have had bulls chase me, and not stop after I climb the fence. You think you've made it into a safe field, then you hear the screeching and creeking of the fence giving way behind, mixed with the belowing of a two thousand pound animal, wanting to do you some harm can make you alittle jumpy. Especially if it is a crazy black angus bull and it is pitch black dark out. I can handle the small spiders, its those big things that might want you to scratch behind their ear, or pound you into the ground. You never know. I miss him though! It does make for some funny times to remember.:D

Things that go "bump" in the night.

Here is another scary time. It's cold, the ground is frozen like a rock. Out in the middle of the field, The dogs have incidently got a herd of something sturred up. You can't see them yet, but you can hear them coming. It's like one of those western shows, only magnified, because the hooves sound like thunder on the frozen ground. Not a tree in sight, and then there they are, crazy horses are blasting by you in a full gallop. Thinking, this is it, going to get killed out there in somekind of freak hunting accident. Everything is going through your mind (boy is killed by a horse stampede).

Ended up being alright, it only lasted afew second. I just don't care for large animals running around me at night, makes me jumpy.:D

I've got lots of other stories, but that is somethings other than spiders that have scared me outside.

A friend of mine told me he watched a Moose step right over top of me while I was sleeping on the ground. Thank God I didnt wake up during the middle of that! Obviously this wasnt in Kentucky.

I agree waking up to Banjo music might be a little bit frightening. :)

I like nature, but not crawling on me while I sleep. There is a reason folks invented floors for their cabins. As for bears, that's a whole other story. It would be nice to at least have a tent around you so that you could maybe reach your gun before you're lunch.
